Ohana Games: Literacy Night
Last Thursday our students had a wonderful time playing games with their families and practicing literacy skills. Students moved through a variety of stations promoting vocabulary, critical thinking skills and the benefit of reading! This fun event was a wonderful success thanks to the support of the PCNC department, cafeteria, Student Council Members, Student Team Leaders and many faculty and staff that helped support this event. We would also like to thank the Hickam Commissary for donating drinks for our students to enjoy.
Principal's Letter
Aloha Hickam Families,
We hope you had a wonderful Spring Break and an amazing first week of the fourth quarter. As we all know, April is the month of the Military Child, as we celebrate the children of our service members and veterans. Every Friday in April, we wear Purple. During the week of April 8th-12th, we have dress-up days for our "Purple Up" spirit week. Listed below is the flyer with the different spirit days.
Otherwise, I invite you to our School Community Council (SSC) Spaghetti Dinner on Wednesday, April 10th, at 5 p.m. in the cafeteria. This is where I share our academic and financial plan for the following school year and some entertainment from our wonderful Chorus and Spanish club. RSVP information is listed on the flyer below. We hope you can join us for some wonderful fellowship, food, and festivities.
Lastly, we hope you can join us for our trivia night on Wednesday, April 17th, and our school performance of The Little Mermaid on Thursday, April 26th, and Saturday, April 27th, at Moanalua Performing Arts Center. Information will be forthcoming. We hope to see you there!
Sincerely,
Patrick Wetzel
Principal
2nd Grade Egg Drop
Also, last Thursday, 2nd Grade had their annual egg drop. Students worked diligently testing their prototypes beforehand to ensure their eggs didn't crack before they dropped them from the K building's second floor. This is a great way for our second grade students to test out their designs in a real world setting.
Great job, 2nd Grade!

Looking For A Few Good Council Members
Water Update
Out of an abundance of caution, additional samples were taken from nearby sinks and the sink in question. Unvalidated results so far have not detected TPH in the water. However, we want to reassure our school community that the classroom sink will remain secured until follow-up testing results are validated and no TPH is detected. Water sampling has been completed routinely since early 2022 as part of the Navy’s Long-Term Monitoring plan after the Red Hill fuel spill. Click here for the results of tests conducted under the Long-Term Monitoring Plan.
Please ensure students bring a full bottle of water to school daily. Water filling stations are available if anyone needs a refill. Mahalo!

Global AMAZING Shake Contest
Over Spring Break, three Hickam Elementary students competed in the 6th Annual Global Amazing Shake Contest. Brooke Haven, David, and Olivia went to Atlanta, Georgia to compete against over 350 students, representing 29 states in the US, plus Canada, Honduras, and Germany. The students competed in the Work-a-Room and Gauntlet Scenarios, and the top students moved on to the next-level. The students were rated on the following skills: Charisma, Confidence, Poise Under Pressure, Common Sense, and Eye Contact.
Although none of our students finished in the top 50, Brooke Haven finished 8th in the Gauntlet portion!! Congratulations to the three students!! They were AMAZING and we are so proud of them.

Hickam Elementary School's Social Emotional Learning program is called Choose Love. During 4th quarter we are focusing on Compassion in Action. "Compassion is the understanding of a problem or the suffering of another, and acting to solve the problem or alleviate the suffering. When we have the courage to step outside of our own busyness, distraction or even pain to help someone else we are choosing love."

After School Club Spotlight: Books and Cooks Club
Advisors Mrs. Perkins and Ms. Rua-Berdine have done a wonderful job incorporating real world learning and literacy. Students spend one day after school reading a book and making recipes based on that story. It has been a delicious way to spend the afternoon!
