April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM)
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). While sexual violence prevention should be done all year around, during the month of April, we focus our efforts to create more intentional campaigns and events to increase awareness and provide education! The National Sexual Violence Resource Center is a great resource to learn more about the history if SAAM, Sexual violence resources, and prevention.
One of the biggest ways we can prevent sexual violence is to talk with our students. It is reported that 81% of high school students report experiencing some form of sexual harassment by the end of high school. Talking to your student about consent, safe relationships, and respecting boundaries is one of the most important prevention efforts we can make. This can be a really challenging conversation to have with your teen. Here is an article from Child Mind Institute that gives great information about not only why it’s important to have the tough conversation but tips for how to have the conversation.
This year, BHS started its first chapter of SafeBAE. SafeBAE is a student lead organization that focuses on sexual violence prevention by encouraging youth advocacy and discussing safe and healthy relationships. This month, SafeBAE planned a Flex activity called “My Hand’s don’t Hurt.” Participating students took a pledge to never put their hands on someone else without their consent. To help demonstrate this, they cut out handprints, signed their name and if they chose to, decorated the hand with kind words for survivors of sexual violence. The SafeBAE club members also made a short video sharing about the work the club does and out local sexual violence prevention resource: SASSMM.
SASSMM is part of the state-wide Sexual Assault Helpline. This number is free, confidential, and runs 24/7: 1-800-871-7741. SASSMM provides a number of services including support and accompaniment during court dates, medical exams such as a sex crimes kit, and when filing a police report. SASSMM Advocates also facilitate support groups, drop in hours at schools, and go to schools to educate students, Kindergarten and beyond! Another available resources is the National Sexual Assault Hotline that can be reached by calling: 1-800-656-4673.
If you are concerned about your student, please reach out to their school counselor: Mary Moore (R10, OCLC, ESOL), Diane Cook (A-F), Scott Bradley (G-N), Christina Ring (O-Z). You can also reach out to Meredith Vogel (general education social worker) or Mary Kunhardt (special education social worker).

3rd Annual Poetry Stroll
We wanted to share photos of Tuesday's Downtown Brunswick Poetry Stroll with you. BHS and BJHS students had a wonderful time finding (and sometimes reciting!) their poems along Maine Street after a reception at the Morrell Room at Curtis Library. (Eric's College Writing students wrote a BCEF grant this year to fund a banner, signs, and a celebration!)
Kathy Koerber, who was a 1st grade teacher in Brunswick for 38 years, came by to meet our student poets. This 3rd annual Poetry Stroll was Kathy's original concept 3 years ago. Kathy is also the organizer of Poem in Your Pocket Day in Brunswick (the 13th annual Poem in Your Pocket Day in Brunswick is this Thursday, April 25th!)
BHS grad and community volunteer extraordinaire Marcy Holmblad who took and/or procured 90 photographs of landmarks and special places in Brunswick that were used as inspiration for our students!
The 4th graders at HBS, working with The Telling Room and Tracy Kinney, and the 2nd graders at KFS, were also part of this year's Poetry Stroll!

Naviance How To
All students have access to this resource that BHS uses for a variety of purposes in the process of investigating career paths and post secondary education options. If students have not yet accessed their Naviance account, they should be doing this in Flex (juniors will be getting passwords next week, in the event your student hasn’t logged in yet).
All students can take a variety of surveys to investigate areas of interest and career pathways and eventually start their list of potential colleges to apply to as seniors.
How to access Naviance:
Naviance can be used to help explore careers and college options/searches. In grade 12 Naviance is used (as a data management tool) to send out all materials from BHS for college applications - including transcripts and letters of recommendation.
1. Go to the BHS Website
2. Select Explore on the top right of the page.
3. Under the Student Column, there is Naviance listed.
4. Type in 04011 for the zip code and select Brunswick High School
5. Usernames are the prefix of emails for BHS (do not include the @portion)
6. Passwords should have been set in Flex or when meeting with school counselors for grades 9 and 10, grade 11 students may have them now or will get them next week.
Where to start?--- Go to Self- Discovery (at top) Complete the surveys!
Reminder - Seniors
Seniors-- you should be indicating in Naviance the responses you are receiving from colleges (acceptances) along with the school you plan on attending (once you know). Check with your counselor if you aren’t sure how to do this.
