Kara Arnold -Middle School Principal at SMSA
Since 2005, I've been dedicated to education in Hartford, starting my journey at Fox Middle School as an ELA teacher. My career path led me through Weaver High School and Journalism and Media Academy. For the past 8 years, I've been at Central Office, first as the Curriculum Specialist for ELA and then as Assistant Director of Secondary Literacy.
I currently live in Vernon with my husband, Keith, and our two children, KJ (9) and Kallan (7). When I'm not focused on education, you can find me cheering for the Steelers and the Vernon Vipers (and now the SMSA Tigers!), diving into romantasy books, or enjoying time with my family.
I'm super excited to join the SMSA team and am looking forward to an amazing year ahead!
Rashaunda Tyson - High School Assistant Principal at SMSA
Hello SMSA Tigers,
My name is Rashaunda Tyson and I am excited to be your new high school Assistant Principal!
I am a proud to say that I attended Hartford Public Schools! Head start at Kinsella, Kindergarten at Mary Hooker, 1st grade at Hockanum in East Hartford, 2nd – 4th at Barbour School, 5th and 6th at M. D. Fox, Fox Middle School and Weaver High School! Because of the solid education that I received within HPS, I was able to attend College of the Holy Cross for a Bachelors in English, St. John’s University for a Masters in Secondary English Education and the University of Connecticut for educational leadership and my 092!
After living out of state, I returned home 11 years ago! I had the honor of teaching 7th and 8th grade ELA at Clark Elementary School for the three years before it closed. I was an Instructional Coach at Hartford High. I taught 8th grade ELA at Burr. And five years ago, I became the Assistant Principal at University High School of Science & Engineering and last school year I was .5 at Noah Webster MicroSociety Magnet School and Environmental Sciences Magnet School at Mary Hooker. I am beyond excited to be back in a secondary school setting.
In the little spare time that I have, I enjoy baking, cooking, spending time with my family, and traveling with my kid K'Nijah!
SMSA has always been a beacon of light for HPS! I am looking forward to joining forces with the current administration and I am also looking forward to meeting all of you and serving you to the best of my ability.
