1ST GR LIT: UNIT 5, Weeks 1-3

Unit 5: Week 1
Learning Goals:
- I can read and understand a fantasy story.
- I can write an opinion about a fantasy story.
- I know about ways we can classify and categorize things.
Key Concepts:
- This week our class will be focusing on the different ways we can classify and categorize things. We will discuss the ways we can sort things, such as by size, color, shape.
- Let’s work together to tell the meaning of each word and use each word in a sentence. Then we will take turns choosing two vocabulary words and using those two words in one sentence.
- Let’s write the letters ar six times in a column in the middle of a piece of paper. I’ll say a spelling word, and you fill in the letters to complete the word. Let’s see how many words you spell correctly!

- Who Said It? Think about who is telling the story as I read it. Then we’ll answer the questions together.
Unit 5: Week 2
Learning Goals:
- I can read and understand a fantasy story.
- I can use text evidence to respond to a fantasy story.
- I know about things we can see in the sky.
Key Concepts:
- This week our class will be focusing on what people can see in the sky. We will discuss and name objects in the daytime sky and the nighttime sky.
Words to Know: another, full, poor, leaped, climb, great, through, stretched
- Look at the picture. We can tell a story about it using the words below. I will write the sentences. Then we will read the sentences together.
Spelling/Phonics: her, fur, dirt, bird, fern, work; review: barn, arm
Comprehension: Events: Cause and Effect (click on the link to access the reading)
- The Duck: You know a cause is what makes something happen. An effect is what happens. Let’s look at the pictures below. What animal do you see? What is the animal doing? I’ll read the sentences, then you fill in the missing word to tell what the duck can do.
Unit 5: Week 3
Learning Goals:
- I can read and understand a nonfiction text.
- I can use text evidence to respond to a nonfiction text.
- I know about different inventions.
Key Concepts:
- This week our class will be focusing on inventions children know about.
Words to Know: began, better, guess, learn, right, sure, idea, unusual
- I’ll write each word on two slips of paper. I will give you a set of words, and I will keep a set. Then we will take turns choosing a slip of paper from our own set and reading the word aloud. The other person finds the matching word in his or her set of words.
- Let’s make more pairs of words that cross each other like the one shown in the example.
