Whitford Catholic Primary School
Newsletter 4 - 21 February 2018
Arcbishop Costelloe SDB has proposed that Lent be a time of healing and hope for all in the Catholic community, as families, as local faith communities and as the Church.
Message from the Principal
Dear Parents
Carpark Project
I take this opportunity of thanking families for their continued support regarding parking in and around the school and the drive-thru drop off and collection of students.
It is extremely disappointing that the current carpark project will be exposed to some delay, but please be assured that families will be kept informed as our position continues to develop over the coming weeks.
As previously mentioned, the safety of our students is our first priority and as such, all fencing will remain in place and extra staff will continue to manage parking and the delivery of students to cars prior to and during school drop off & pick-up.
Sundowner
On a lighter note, the staff and I look forward to meeting parents at the Sundowner in our courtyard this evening. It should be a beautiful night, and mingling under the stars will be a fabulous way to begin the school year.
Kindest regards and best wishes for a wonderful week.
Many blessings
Tamara McGougan
Principal

Student Assessments
During weeks 3, 4 & 5 of this term, the students will be undertaking standardised assessments to provide class teachers with quantitative and qualitative data on student performance, identifying students’ current strengths and weaknesses to inform teaching and learning.
In Years 1 – 6, Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT) are being administered in the areas of Reading, Comprehension and Mathematics.
Students in Years 3 – 6 will also complete Progressive Achievement Tests in Grammar & Punctuation.
The results of these formal assessments will enable teachers to measure academic growth during the current school year.
Year 1 and 2 students will also complete Numeracy and Literacy assessments which will enable the school to track student progress over time.
Relief teachers will be employed during this time to enable class teachers to administer the assessments.
Sacramental Enrolment Weekend
Just a reminder that this weekend is the Sacramental Enrolment Weekend for ALL Sacraments. The Sacrament Enrolment form, including payment, needs to be completed and handed in on one of the Masses on the weekend of the 24th and the 25th of February. These forms are not to be dropped off at school or at the Parish. Parents of Year 3 will also need to include a copy of your child’s Baptism certificate in order for the Parish to update their records.
Biscuit Sale for Project Compassion
As part of a fundraising initiative, Cooper Bouwman (5 White) will be selling chocolate chip cookies each Friday at recess during Lent. This week the cookies will be available to Year 2 students. Biscuits will be sold in bags of 3 for the special price of $2. However, there are limited bags so please still bring your recess as normal. All proceeds will go to Project Compassion. Great work Cooper.

Coles Sports for Schools
If you are shopping at Coles please don't forget to grab your vouchers and drop them to the front office. The more vouchers we can collect the more sports equipment we can claim. Please keep the vouchers coming.
Absentee Email Address
If your child is absent from school, please use your School Stream app or email absentee@wcps.wa.edu.au. Please check that you have the current email address, as we have had a few parents mentioning that their email was undeliverable.
Considerate Parking
Parents are asked to please be considerate to our neighbours when parking, especially around Barradine Way.
No parking is allowed in the verge opposite the gym and City of Joondalup Rangers will be patrolling the area issuing fines to those parking in these areas.
Also, a reminder that parking on Marmion Avenue is dangerous and parents pulling on to Marmion Avenue after pick-up has caused a few near accidents.
Please refrain from using the Mercyville carpark for parking and also, when using Albion Park drive through, please exit the same way you entered.
Assembly
This weeks assembly is a senior assembly and will be held on Friday 23 February in the school hall at 2.15pm. The assembly will be presented by 5G and merit awards will be presented to the following students in the senior classes.

Class News
Pre Kindy
We've been singing lots of counting songs and rhymes and enjoying play dough and painting during activity times. Thank you to Mrs Hayes for working in our room for the past few weeks while Mrs Thompson has been away.
Kindy
We've been recycling some cardboard boxes and making a slide down our grassy hill!
Pre Primary
We have been very busy this week in Pre-Primary, having a go at lots of activities, working with and getting to know all of our friends.
Year 1
This week we have been sharing the stories of our Baptism by bringing in photos, candles, certificates and mementos. It has been a wonderful experience and we have enjoyed talking about when we were babies. We have learnt that there are many symbols used in a Baptism ceremony and special people need to be there. Test us on our knowledge, ask a Year One child what they have learnt about Baptism this week.
Year 2
In Year 2 we have been talking about Lent. We have made a Lenten promise about how we can be more like Jesus during Lent.
Year 3
Year 3’s having been enjoying learning all about cyber safety. We had great fun meeting Harold the giraffe and learning about keeping our passwords private and keeping ourselves safe while we’re using our iPads.
Year 4
We are busy looking at lots of ways to add and have enjoyed sharing our strategies with others. Lots of collaboration makes for super, smart kids!
Year 5
The Year 5 children have been researching different Aboriginal language groups and have then used what they’ve discovered to create a design relevant to each group. Our designs will then be printed on to T-shirts that we will get to wear to a special day at Mater Dei College, later this term.
Year 6
Year 6 have spent some time learning about the harmful effects of smoking on our bodies. We enjoyed our final visit to the Life Ed Van. We reflected on all the wonderful knowledge we have gained from our visits over the years and we even got to say a final farewell to Harold. He was sad to see us go!
Uniform Update
Ties and Size 6 royal shorts have now arrived.
School Banking
Also deposits from 13 December 2017 have now been processed on 21 February 2018 due to a Banking submission error. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.
Thank you

Kids of Mercy
Kids of Mercy: The ladies lounge was truly abuzz last week. They love to see and hold the special mementos that the children bring. These items often spark a memory for the ladies. That is a gift!

Year One Drama
We have been having a lot of fun in Drama this term. This week we have been looking at characterisation and how we change our voice, facial expressions and gestures to create a character. Dressing up in costumes as different characters has been our favourite!
