News and Notes from the VPSS Central Office
From the desk of the Superintendent Tommy Byler
In the coming weeks, it becomes a very stressful time as we begin to put the final decisions on our staffing plans for the 24-25 school year. I wanted to share with you a little behind the scenes this week of what goes into this process each year.
PROJECTED NUMBERS...
Each year we begin the staffing process by rolling over the student count from this past year and move them forward and year and project student numbers. Many times this determines if we need to add or subtract teachers in a specific grade level, specific subject or specific schools. This year that task is even more of a challenge as we look at the addition of Vermilion Charter School into our parish that will definately cause a fluctuation in our numbers.
STAFF INTENTIONS...
The next step is to get the intentions of all of our current working staff as to their projected plans for next year. We have many staff who will be entering the world of retirement and some will be moving on to disricts or other careers. This process along with our staffing projections determines which jobs will be officially open on April 15th as we begin the hiring process for next school year.
TURNING UP THE RECRUITMENT EFFORTS...
The final step in our initial process is to go out and find as many certified teachers as we can and try to convince them that Vermilion is a place for them to call home. With a nationwide teacher shortage, these efforts are not as easy as they once were as the colleges and universities are not turning out certificated personnel nearly fast enough for those departing the profession. Because of this, we also increase our efforts to attend college fairs and job fairs to find college degreed individuals that is a requirement to serve as a classroom teacher.
PUTTING IT TOGETHER....
So once we put all of these factors in to place, we let the games begin. The hiring process and the staffing season is a challenge for all school systems and in the past years has become a real struggle. Many of our surrounding districts have gone the entire 23-24 school year with jobs unfilled.
Help up out and put in a good word for our Vermilion schools or better yet if you have a college degree and are looking for a possible career change check out the possible chances of you earning certification and becoming part of our teaching staff. In addition to this, we are always looking for dedicated employees to drive our buses, work in our cafeterias and to help keep our school environments clean. Be on the lookout and help us to fill up our 24-25 staff of over 1300 employees.
Have a great week!

Superintendent Tommy Byler
