Important Calendar Change

MAP Growth Testing Begins Tomorrow
Our end of year MAP Growth Testing begins tomorrow, Wednesday, April 17th. These adaptive tests give us a benchmark for a student's instructional level and a basis to measure growth in learning throughout the year. These tests will be administered in grades 2-8. Please ensure that your child has a good night’s rest and a nutritious breakfast.
FAW Earns Sustainability Award
Last year, Mrs. Rutherford began putting aside leftover or spoiled food, (mostly unclaimed salads) and Nurse Rose would take them with her to volunteer at Summerseat Farm to feed the animals. It cuts down on food waste ending up in the garbage and gives the animals, such as the chickens and bunnies, much needed greens. The efforts of our staff were recognized by the St. Mary's County Commission on the Environment and we were selected as winners of the 2023 Sustainability Award. Nurse Rose and Mrs. Rutherford will attend the awards ceremony at the St. Mary's County Earth Day celebration at Summerseat Farm this Saturday, April 20th. If you're there, stop by and say hello!
Congratulations to Mrs. Rutherford and Nurse Rose on this achievement!

Support FAW Destination Imagination!
We are excited to announce that two of our Destination Imagination (DI) teams from Father Andrew White School are two of the top-scoring DI teams in the state of Maryland and now have the opportunity to present their Challenge solution at the DI Global Finals in Kansas City, Missouri —an international competition where they will compete against teams from around the globe.
Please consider donating to help these teams get to the Globals competition!! Destination Imagination is an educational, academic program that has helped our students learn and practice valuable skills like creative and critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork through different competitive, STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) Challenges.
The teams are working hard to raise the $5,500/team registration fee plus the almost $1,000/student it will take to get them there to experience this amazing opportunity! Raising $20K in only one month’s time is daunting, but they are DItermined!!! Every gift is a blessing and we truly appreciate your support! Thank you so much for your contributions.

If you have lived in Southern Maryland for some time, you’re undoubtedly all too familiar with spring allergy season. This time of year brings lots of pretty flowers, green grass, and budding trees - along with tons of pollen and miserable allergy symptoms! Many people have treatment plans in place, including daily medications (antihistamines, nose sprays, eye drops) to help alleviate their symptoms. For those with asthma, it’s important to keep prescriptions up-to-date for inhalers and nebulizers, and to maintain contact with health care providers, as needed. For certain medications, parents often keep a supply at school so they are available to be administered if needed. Additionally at school, I have asked that all teachers turn their air purifiers up a notch to at least help with our inside air. Students should always have drinking water available, and they should wash their hands often (which is important in washing away pollen along with regular dirt and germs). Similarly, students can use a wet paper towel to wipe their eyes (or dry their face after splashing with water). Even though these things won't get rid of the problem, they are small actions that can be taken to possibly offer some relief. If you have any additional tips or helpful ideas, I would love to hear from you! While we can pretty much guarantee that pollen will be plentiful throughout the spring, here is a link to monitor the daily asthma and allergy forecast:
