Your monthly school district newsletter
Thursday, Feb. 1
Dear Canby Families,
I hope you enjoy some very fun and informative tidbits below in this month’s CSD Top 3, those three things we think you’d like to know, plus the lunch menus. Enjoy!
Staff Spotlight
School Counseling Week
Next week is National School Counseling Week! Thank you to those on our district’s counseling team for helping all students succeed. Please join us in thanking a school counselor or social worker!
A Musical Treat from One of Our Own
Baker Prairie Middle School Band Teacher Jordan Paulus composed a piece of original music, titled “Of Nonhuman Origin,” and submitted it for an international competition, the Cory Band Royal Welsh College for Music and Drama Composition Prize. His piece was selected as one of just four finalists from around the world! Listen to his composition below, performed by the Cory Band at the college based in Cardiff, Wales, UK; and be sure to watch all the way to the end for an excellent interview with Jordan. Congratulations, Jordan!
Blood Drive Honoring Mike Zagyva
The Zagyva family is teaming up with the American Red Cross and the Canby School District to host a blood drive at Ackerman Center on Saturday, March 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The family is dedicating the blood drive to their patriarch Mike Zagyva, who is a retired Canby educator and former school board member. Last month, Mike was diagnosed with leukemia and has received many rounds of blood and platelets thanks to donations. The family’s goal with the drive is, “to replace all that Mike has received and then some for future patients to use.”
“We will be asking you to roll up your sleeves and donate,” His daughter, Sara Hepler, and the whole Zagyva family said on Mike’s Caring Bridge page.
Vision Screenings
This month, Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation has come to Canby and worked with our school nurses to provide vision screenings for students at our elementary and K-8 schools. They have visited six schools and screened about 2,100 students so far! There is a make-up day in February to screen students who were absent. In total, they aim to screen all elementary and Ninety-One students for a total of about 2,200. Thank you, OLSHF!
Note: Families of elementary students, you will receive a letter if further vision examination is required for your student but you will not receive any communication if the results are normal.
What's for lunch?
Check out the new monthly meal menus here. If you have not applied for free school meals, do so today either online or using a paper application.
Please note that menus are subject to change.
Community Bulletin Board
For information on upcoming events and opportunities for children and families, take a look at the flyers posted on our Community Bulletin Board. Note that many flyers are submitted from outside Canby School District, and Canby School District does not necessarily sponsor or endorse them.
How do we create a vibrant and engaged learning community dedicated to growth for all?
