Community Crew News #35
April 27th, 2024
Greetings Conway Community!
We had a great visit by Dr. Philyaw on Thursday. She attended our one of our Crew Celebration assemblies as was so impressed by all our student leaders. She heard all about the 6th grade expedition, The Primacy of Self Discover. 6th grade learners explained the fascinating world of the human body, metabolism, & the microbiome. They explained how they diagnosed conditions & wrote compassionately to mock patients.
In first grade, two students explained to her how they use a Peace Path to problem solve. In fact, the two students role played a conflict for her. She was so impressed by their ability to articulate and demonstrate these problem solving skills.
Our EUSD Framework for the Future incorporates four aspects within the learning model, personalized, authentic, competency-based, and inclusive and equitable. These four aspects are all deeply embedded in our Expeditionary Learning model in many ways. Dr. Philyaw saw strong evidence in of these four aspects across our EPIC school.

Principal Weekly Update #35
3rd - 6th Grades STATE TESTING BEGINS
There are many ways to measure your child's learning. Your child's teacher uses report card grades, classroom work, teacher observations, and end-of-year statewide test results to get a complete picture of your child's learning. Each year, students participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). Your child's individualized education program (IEP) calls for them to take the California Alternate Assessments (CAAs).
This year, your child will take the following tests:
• CAAs for English language arts and math, required tests in grades 3-8 and 11
The testing schedule is link here for you - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1B9uOAQtmaPJHK7mCpKWwfX08KQgZ4xTAGEj50hgMNjE/edit
Testing does begin this Monday!
You are an important part of your child's education. To make sure your child feels comfortable taking the tests, you can do the following:
Explain to your child that these tests are used as tools to help them learn, and that they should not be anxious or scared.
Remind your child that you and their teacher want them to try their very best and are there to help, every step of the way.
Explore the practice tests with your child on the CAASPP Online Practice and Training Tests web page at www.caaspp.org/practice-and-training/index.html so they can become familiar with the platform and setup of the tests.
You will receive your child's results at or before the beginning of the next school year. The results will identify where your child is doing well or needs more help, so you can better support their learning at home and teachers can better support their learning in the classroom.
To learn more about these tests go to the CAASPP Starting Smarter website at ca.startingsmarter.org, or review the CDE Parent Guides to Understanding web page at www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/parentguidetounderstand.asp.
If you have questions, please contact Andrea Sima at asima@eusd.org.
Other ways you can support your learner!
● Encourage your child to do their very best on everything they do in school, including this end-of-year state test.
● Make sure he or she gets plenty of sleep the night before each test and has a healthy breakfast.
● Support your child by explaining the purpose of the tests and helping with homework and test reviews.
We appreciate your partnership in helping our Conway EPIC learners to do his/her best on the test.
Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have about state testing this year. Together our learners will be more EPIC than ever.
Pizza with the Principal
