Pre-K & Kindergarten Kickstart Takes Place TODAY
Pre-K and Kindergarten Kickstart will take place today, April 3, from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm at all elementary schools in Bastrop ISD. This is an opportunity to visit your child's future campus, get assistance with enrollment and turn in required documents. If you can't make it today, you can still enroll your child online.

Be sure to have the important documents below when enrolling your child:

- Current proof of residency in BISD (utility bill in parent's/guardian's name (electric, gas, water) for a 911 address (no PO boxes); recently paid rent receipt; current lease agreement; signed purchase contract).
We look forward to welcoming all of our new students!
New & Returning Student Registration Opens TODAY
New student registration and returning student verification is now open! Visit www.bisdtx.org/registration for more information.
Returning student verification is required for all students that are currently enrolled in BISD and returning with us for the 2024-2025 school year. Log into your Family Access account now to complete the verification process.
After logging into Family Access, you will select "Returning Student Online Registration". This process allows you to verify all of your child's information is correct and provide updates for any important information that has changed such as contact phone numbers, emergency contacts, and student health history.
Student Information Verification for returning students must be completed before students can receive teacher assignments or schedules, care from campus healthcare professionals, or bus transportation for the 2024-25 school year.
If you cannot remember your Family Access credentials, use the Forgot Your Login/Password? link. If you're still having trouble logging in to Family Access, contact your child's current campus for assistance. If you are enrolling a new student who is the sibling of a student currently enrolled in BISD, you do not need to create a new Family Access account. You can enroll a new student by selecting "New Student Online Enrollment".

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month
We encourage our families to talk with their students about being safe and finding trusted adults to confide in if they have concerns about their own well-being, or that of their peers. We recognize this can be a challenging topic to approach, and we recommend using a resource such as the Committee for Children's Second Step conversation guide, "Early, Open, Often" to initiate the discussion with your child. Your school counselor may be able to assist with any questions or concerns that arise from these conversations.
Safe Storage of Firearms
Texas law now requires school districts to distribute information to parents and guardians about the safe storage of firearms. The attached information will help you learn about options for, as well as how to talk to your child and others about, the safe storage of firearms.
In 2021, 4,613 Texans experienced gun-related deaths. The Texas Department of State Health Services (SHS) reports that 55% of Texas firearms deaths in 2020 were suicides and that 59% of all suicides in Texas were by firearms. Suicide attempts involving firearms have a 90% fatality rate. Restricting access to guns is critical in reducing acts of violence, whether as self-harm or towards others. Acts of mass violence and interpersonal violence often end in suicide.
It is unlawful to store, transport, or abandon an unsecured firearm in a place where children are likely to be and can obtain access to the firearm. Under Texas Penal Code 46.13, a person commits the offense of making a firearm accessible to a child if the child gains access to a readily dischargeable firearm, and the person with criminal negligence:
- Failed to secure the firearm; or
- Left the firearm in a place to which the person knew or should have known the child would gain access
The penalty for allowing a child access to a firearm can range from a Class C misdemeanor (punishable by a $500 fine) to a Class A misdemeanor (punishable by a $4000 fine, a year in jail, or a combination of the two).
Remember, a gun should be stored unloaded in a safe or locked container, with ammunition stored elsewhere. You can learn more and find additional resources from the Texas Department of Public Safety at https://safegunstoragetexas.com. Texas exempts the purchase of firearm safety equipment from Texas Sales and Use Tax.

What Type of Storage Works Best for You?
Protecting all Texans means knowing how to stop weapons from reaching the wrong hands. No matter where you keep your gun, it needs to be stored safely when you’re finished using it. There are many choices when it comes to safe gun storage. It all depends on the type of firearm, your living situation, and cost.
Talking to Others About Gun Safety
About one-third of homes with children have at least one firearm — and many of those guns are both unlocked and loaded. It is important to keep your child away from firearms. But parents are often uncomfortable having a conversation about gun safety with others. Remember, you’re just trying to keep your child safe.

Texas Assessments Resources for Parents
The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) and End of Course (EOC) Testing will take place between April 9 and May 3. These state tests are used to determine a child’s preparedness for the next grade level. Below are the timeframes when testing will occur by grade level and subject.
Visit the Practice Test Site for TELPAS & STAAR so your child can get familiar with how the test might look on the day of their testing. Ask your child's teacher about what tests they will be taking and in what language. To learn more about the STAAR Test in Texas, go to the STAAR resources webpage where you will find more information about who is tested, what is tested, what the test looks like, and much more. If you would like to see a printable version of previous STAAR tests that you can use with your child to practice questions, visit the STAAR Released Test Questions.
Coffee Connections
Parents of children diagnosed with autism in McDade and Bastrop ISD are invited to join us for coffee and pastries while getting to know other parents. The event on April 22 covers creating clear social and behavioral expectations.
Please RSVP to lgaston@bisdtx.org.
