March 2024, Quarter 4
Gator Families
It is hard to believe but we are entering the final stretch of the '23-'24 SY. Our students have worked hard this year and continue to show respectful, responsible, and relentless behaviors. I know that with your support we will finish out this year strong!
Our Renovation project is beginning to pick up the pace. Over Spring Break there will be several projects: installation of windows (replacing plywood covers), wall wings extending out from the cafeteria stage, fire pump installation in the tractor shed, tearing off and finishing install of new roof. Our last day of occupancy at MoES will be on the teacher last day of school, which is currently slated for Monday, June 10th. MoES will be CLOSED this summer as the renovation is completed. Our front office staff and administrative team will be housed at Monocacy Middle School this summer. We will be able to answer phones, respond to the needs of our families, and set up appointments for families wanting to meet. I am looking forward to opening the school in the Fall for our students, staff, families, and communities with a fresher look.
Unfortunately, we will not have our quarterly family award's ceremony celebrating our students for honor roll, perfect attendance, and character. Instead each classroom will have a mini award's program in their classrooms. Students earning an award will receive it in their classrooms on April 22nd or 23rd. We love to celebrate these accomplishments with our families and cherish the award's program, but with the timing of the end of quarter, report cards, and state testing we cannot accommodate a time to hold the programs for our families.
I look forward to a tremendously successful end of the school year. I am here to serve you and our community so please don't hesitate to reach out.
Troy Barnes,
Principal

MCAP Testing
MCAP (Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program) will be administered in both Reading (ELA) and Math to all 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders.
3rd Grade: ELA (4/15, 4/16, 4/18, and 4/19) & Math (4/29, 4/30, 5/1, and 5/3)
4th Grade: ELA (4/22, 4/23, 4/25, and 4/26) & Math (4/29, 4/30, 5/1, and 5/3)
5th Grade: ELA (4/15, 4/16, 4/18, and 4/19) & Math (4/29, 4/30, 5/1, and 5/3)
Our students have been working hard and our ready to show what they know. Please encourage your child to get a good night's rest and to do their best (take their time, use their resources, and relax). We need all 3rd - 5th graders in school and on time.
Attendance
We began the year with Strive for Five, asking our families to make it a goal to miss no more than 5 days of school. How is your child doing? How many days of school have they missed? Let's prioritize daily school attendance. We need students in school!
When students miss school they fall behind their classmates. This is especially evident in math as the concepts and skills build upon one another.
When students miss school they have a more difficult time with building strong social interactions and skills.
When students miss school they affect our school's Maryland Report Card rating and jeopardize the success of our entire school.
When students miss school for more than 18 days they are considered chronically absent, which can result in failing grades, retention, falling behind their peers (academically, behaviorally, and socially), and possible legal ramifications.
We are in this together! I want your child in school every day that they are healthy enough to be (24 hours with no fever and no vomiting or diarrhea). Sniffles and coughs....send your child to school. Tired....send your child to school. If your family is struggling with regular school attendance, reach out. We are here to support you and your child.
5th Grade Promotion and Ceremony
More Details to Come
We have a tremendous group of 5th grade students. I am so very proud of each and every one of them. Many I have seen grow and develop into outstanding young men and women over the past 7 years. The 5th grade promotion ceremony is a time to celebrate, reflect, and move forward.
Our 5th grade ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 30th at 9:30 am.
*The ceremony will be held in our Gym.
*Each student can have 2 family members attend due to capacity.
*The event will be recorded and shared with interested family members who are not able to attend.
*In addition, the event will be live-streamed into each classroom so that all staff and students can participate in this special event.
*Students should dress for success to celebrate this special occasion.
5th Grade Celebration
*After the ceremony students will have an opportunity to change and participate in some fun activities
*We need your help to make this event a success:
- 5th grade parent volunteers to help run the PTA sponsored celebration
- PK - 5th grade parent volunteers to help with planning the event (non 5th grade families this is a great way to learn about the celebration and to help build it up for when your child exits MoES).
- PK - 4th grade parent volunteers to help with setting up the event so our 5th grade families can participate in the ceremony.
If you are interested and willing to assist, please email troy.barnes@fcps.org. I will share your name with our PTA to help make this event a success for our Amazing 5th graders.
