A Note from Mrs. Pitts
Dear RES Family,
We have had two days off for snow/no power but as of now, our last day of school is June 14.
Please read the information about the solar eclipse carefully. It is times like these that we, as educators, feel the weight of our responsibility but having the support of our families is so helpful. We really do want you to be informed and know your options for Monday's historical event.
Thank you,
Michelle Pitts

State Testing: Reading and Math in May (Grades 3 and 4)
Each year, students in grades 3 through 8 participate in the New Hampshire Statewide
Assessment System (NH SAS). Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), Section 1111(b)(2) and New Hampshire Law, RSA 193-C:6 requires each school district in the State to implement a set of high-quality academic assessments that includes, at a minimum, assessments in mathematics, reading/language arts and science to be administered in each of grades 3-8; and in science not less than once during grades 3-5 and grades 6-9. Furthermore, ESSA sections 1111(b)(2)(B) require State assessments to be the “same academic assessments used to measure the
achievement of all public elementary school and secondary school students in the State,”
and provide for the participation in such assessments to all students.
Assessment State assessments are an important part of a student’s core educational program. They provide an evaluation of student mastery of content and skills in various academic areas,
serve as one tool for measuring the degree to which students are on track to graduate high school and be college- and career-ready, and help inform future instruction in the classroom. Along with student work on classroom assignments, projects, essays, and local assessments, state assessment results give teachers and you, the parents, important information about where students are on their path toward academic success.
Exemption:
You are allowed to exempt your child from participation in the state assessment
(permitted in RSA 193-C:6) You must complete and submit an exemption form. Please
contact your child’s school to receive a copy of the exemption form. Please understand,
if you choose to exempt your child from the assessment, no scores or summary of
individual student performance, based on the statewide assessment, will be provided to
you or your student.
Students results for the NH SAS (reading/writing, mathematics and science) are generally
available upon the student completing the test. Schools will send a student’s Individual
Score Report home before the end of the school year. If you prefer to see the results
once your child completes the assessment, please contact the school principal.
The NH Department of Education has developed a comprehensive website
https://nh.portal.cambiumast.com/families.html that is available to everyone. There are
resources and information about the test for parents and students.
If you have questions, please contact your child’s classroom teacher or school principal.

Solar Eclipse
You may have heard that we are approaching a rare historic event on April 8, a solar eclipse! Knowing we will soon experience a partial solar eclipse, there is some information we would like to share and some precautionary measures we will need to take, as the eclipse will occur at the end of the day, during school time.
While this is a rare and exciting phenomenon, it presents a risk of eye injury to everyone, especially children who may not understand the dangers of looking directly into the sun. At no time will it be safe to look at the sun without the protection of properly certified eclipse viewing glasses. The timing of the eclipse, when children are transitioning to their homes and boarding buses presents a challenge, but we can work together to make this both a memorable and safer experience.
We are offering two options to families:
Pick up your student(s) early on April 8 so you may directly supervise them. Students who are picked up early will not be marked “dismissed”. This would require a note (with a specific pick up time) that is provided to your child’s teacher by the morning of April 8.
Pick up your child or send your child on the bus at the regular time. Please know that students will be dismissed from INSIDE the school and will exit quickly and facing down as they can't walk with the eyewear on. We will provide these protective to all students. Please note that we are providing protective eyewear but cannot guarantee students will keep this eyewear on at all times. We are also working closely with the bus company to ensure all safety precautions have been considered.
We would like to share these valuable resources with our families:
We want to thank Ms. Boulay for coordinating a presenter for grades 2-4 who will teach about the solar eclipse, her own efforts to teach all of our students about this historic event and the information she has provided to our team over the last few weeks.
Children could be outside with their teacher (teacher choice) during the solar eclipse if the timing does not conflict with dismissal to experience this historic event. If you do NOT want your child to be outside with protective eyewear during this time, you must OPT OUT with an email to resoffice@sau50.org. You may copy and paste the following message into the email:
I do not want my child to view the solar eclipse on April 8 but do acknowledge my child will need to exit the building for dismissal, if the timing aligns.
Signed,
We are asking that all families have conversations around details of the eclipse and the safety that is necessary when viewing it. Please make sure children understand that permanent damage to retinas can happen in seconds. We want all children to be knowledgeable about the event and aware of the potential dangers. With the proper precautions, we know that this will be an unforgettable experience for our students and staff.

RES takes the Apparel Impact Challenge for Earth Day
Prior to Earth Day, we are challenging students to look around their homes, gather any textiles headed for the trash and bring them to school to see if they can fill an Apparel Impact truck on Friday, April 19, the date of RES’s Earth Day celebration. This year, Apparel Impact is on track to clothe 5,000 families. Clothes and other items no longer considered wearable can be used to make insulation for houses, stuffing for car seats, and to make carpet, among other things.
Please see the list below to learn what items can be donated on April 19. And thanks to everyone who takes part in our RES/Apparel Impact Earth Day Challenge. If you have any questions, please reach out to Ms. Wheeler at dwheeler@sau50.org.

Proud Mom Moment
My oldest child, Lu, has done it again! Another mural in another learning space that brings joy to RES. Lu is in art school and students love to watch this process as it unfolds. So proud:)!
April Storm!
I just wanted to memorialize this storm in April. It was quite strong! We lost power at RES and part of a tree but we are thankful to the custodial team for coming to school and ensuring our building was safe. We hope everyone was ok throughout the storm!

Lunch with Students
We do allow one family member at a time to have lunch with their child(ren) but this is very optional and we don't want families to feel pressured to attend.
- Email resoffice@sau50.org if you would like to attend with the date/time (starting October 1). It is important to anticipate who will be in the building. We love these opportunities for students and their family members but we will always put safety first.
- We do have a focus during this time...eating for energy and brain power!
- Family members must meet the child in the cafeteria and leave from the cafeteria.
- Lunch times are:
Kindergarten-11:45-12:10
First Grade-12:15-12:40
Second Grade-12:15-12:40
Third Grade- 11:15-11:40
