April is Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month!
As April approaches, it's important to recognize that it marks Autism Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing understanding, acceptance, and support for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Autism is a complex developmental condition that affects communication, social interaction, and behavior. During this month, we aim to raise awareness about autism and promote acceptance and inclusion within our school community and beyond. It's crucial for us as parents to educate ourselves and our children about autism, as greater awareness leads to greater understanding and empathy. By fostering an environment of acceptance and support, we can ensure that all students, regardless of their differences, feel valued and included in our school community. Let's use this month as an opportunity to learn, advocate, and celebrate the unique strengths and contributions of individuals with autism.
Largo High School will celebrate Autism Awareness Month with a spirit week that students in our Autism program selected with the help of our Autism teachers. We are excited to deepen our commitment to this work, and celebrate some of the most gifted students in "The Den."
We Need Your Presence and Advocacy for Largo PTSO
I'm reaching out to urge you to consider the invaluable impact your participation could have on our school community, with deeper commitment and active participation as a member of the Largo High School Parent-Teacher-Student Organization (PTSO). The PTSO serves as a vital link between parents, teachers, students, and the administration, working together to enhance the educational experience and foster a supportive environment for our school's community.
Here are a few compelling reasons why your involvement in the PTSO is crucial:
Advocacy for Students: By actively participating in the PTSO, you have the opportunity to advocate for the needs and interests of our students. Your insights and perspectives can help shape policies, programs, and initiatives that directly impact the educational journey of our children.
Supporting School Programs: The PTSO plays a significant role in supporting various school programs and activities, ranging from academic initiatives to extracurricular events. Your involvement can contribute to the success and sustainability of these programs, ensuring that our students have access to enriching opportunities both inside and outside the classroom.
Building Community: One of the most valuable aspects of the PTSO is its ability to build a sense of community among parents, teachers, students, and administrators. By actively participating in PTSO meetings, events, and activities, you can forge meaningful connections with fellow parents and school stakeholders, fostering a supportive network that benefits everyone involved.
Funding and Fundraising: Many essential resources and activities within our school rely on funding and fundraising efforts coordinated by the PTSO. Your involvement in these efforts can directly contribute to enhancing the learning environment, providing resources for classrooms, technology upgrades, and other essential needs that benefit our students and teachers alike.
Parental Engagement: Your active participation in the PTSO demonstrates to your child the importance you place on their education and school community. By showing your support and involvement, you set a positive example and encourage your child to take pride in their school and become engaged learners.
Let's finish the year strong. Please connect with our PTSO President, Ava Coffen, at LargoLionsPTSO@gmail.com to learn more about how you can get involved.

RESHARE: Spring Break Suggestions
With spring break just arriving, it's a great opportunity for high school students to recharge, explore, and even learn something new. Here are a few suggestions to make the most of this time:
Explore Local Opportunities: Encourage your teen to take advantage of local museums, parks, or events happening in your community. It's a chance to appreciate their surroundings and perhaps discover something new.
Volunteer: Spring break can be a perfect time for your teen to give back to the community and earn service learning hours. Look for volunteer opportunities at local charities, animal shelters, or community centers. It's not only fulfilling but also looks great on college and career applications.
Pursue Passion Projects: Whether it's writing, painting, coding, or cooking, spring break offers uninterrupted time to dive into hobbies and passion projects. Encourage your teen to dedicate time to something they love or have been wanting to try.
Prepare for Upcoming Exams or College Applications: For juniors and seniors, spring break can be an excellent time to study for upcoming exams or work on college applications. For freshmen and sophomores, they will be heading into standardized testing season. Setting aside a few hours each day for focused studying can help set students up for success.
Travel or Explore Virtually: If travel is an option, consider planning a family trip. Whether it's a road trip to a nearby destination or exploring a new city, traveling can be a memorable experience. If traveling isn't possible, encourage your teen to explore new cultures and places virtually through documentaries, online tours, or cultural activities.
Relax and Recharge: Finally, remind your teen that it's okay to take some time to relax and recharge. High school can be demanding, and spring break offers a chance to rest and rejuvenate for the remainder of the semester.
Regardless of how they choose to spend their spring break, encourage your teen to make the most of this time and create memories that will last a lifetime.
RESHARE: Supporting Students Throught the End of the Year
As we approach the end of the school year, your support plays a crucial role in your child's success. Here are a few ways you can help them thrive:
Establish a Routine: Encourage consistent study habits and a healthy balance between schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and relaxation.
Communicate Openly: Maintain open lines of communication with your child about their academic progress, challenges, and goals. Offer guidance and support where needed.
Provide a Supportive Environment: Create a conducive environment for studying at home with minimal distractions. Offer encouragement and praise for their efforts.
Set Realistic Expectations: Help your child set achievable goals for the end of the school year, considering their strengths and limitations.
Offer Assistance: Be available to assist with homework, projects, or studying when needed, but also encourage independence and problem-solving skills.
Celebrate Achievements: Acknowledge and celebrate your child's achievements, no matter how small, to boost their confidence and motivation.
By working together and providing the necessary support, we can help our students finish the school year strong.
COMMUNITY RESOURCES
Sora - The Student Reading App
The Sora student reading app is a state-of-the-art reading experience that allows our students to borrow ebooks and audiobooks from the Largo HS Library media center’s digital collection. Students can access this resource on their smartphones, tablets, Chromebooks or desktops. They can read for pleasure and complete assigned reading anytime, anywhere.
Sora is a tool proven to help students read more. Student time spent reading ebooks and audiobooks nearly doubled in schools since Sora's introduction to schools in September 2018. We would like to get more of our scholars reading so we ask you to partner with us to encourage our students to read more. Have them take at least 15 minutes daily to spend time reading for pleasure.
To access this resource click, https://soraapp.com/library/pgcpsmd and have your student/s use their PGCPS credentials to login. If you have any questions, reach out to Mrs. Biscette, Largo Library Media Specialist, at jessie.simmons@pgcps.org.

University of Maryland Summer Opportunity for PGCPS Students
This summer, faculty from the University of Maryland have secured a grant to offer a summer writing workshop for rising juniors and seniors in PGCPS high schools, and this opportunity is being extended to students at Largo.
The workshop is a three-week series in July (Mon-Thu each week, 9am-1pm, lunch included) aimed at supporting college-bound students of Color in writing their college application essays and building college-level writing skills. We are particularly hoping to work with students who may not otherwise have extensive extra support (e.g. paid writing tutors outside school) to do this work. The workshop will be totally free for students.
