11th April 2024
Dear Parents and Friends of our School Kia Ora/Hello/Kamusta
Kia ora koutou,
We hope all our tamariki have a fabulous break at home. This is a chance to slow the pace down, catch up on some sleep and recharge the batteries for Term 2. Over the holidays we ask that you keep up with:
- Reading to your children
- Creating time for your childen to read on their own
- Practising tying shoes laces if this is still tricky
- Naming your children's clothes - the lost property box is overflowiing with unnamed clothes
- Practising blowing noses and washing their hands if this is still tricky
- Practing how to manage their belongings - putting things away when they have finished using them, looking after their clothes, toys etc.
When your children return to school we encourage you to put a change of clothing in schools bags, a jacket and that children come to school with a few layers of clothing so they can keep warm when outside but take a few layers off when in the classroom. Children are not allowed to wear shoes in the classrom but are encouraged to wear socks or slippers. Please name gumboots!!!
We had a fire drill on Monday. The tamariki asked lots of really good questions about this and assembled safely in our evacuation area which is on bottom school field.
We are on the lookout for some volunteers to listen to children reading. If you know of any people in our community that might be able to help us out can you please shoulder tap them and suggest they give us a call. Reading mileage is so important and we have a number of children who would benefit from this at school.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES UPDATE
Biennial Community Survey
During Term 3 we conducted our biennial community survey. We will continue to share sections of the survey each fortnight in the newsletter. The full survey is available to read on our school's website.
10. Toko School provides opportunities for me to play a supporting role in my child/ren's education.(e.g. parent help, sports events Mutukaroa Meetings and home learning etc).
100% of parents feel they play a supporting role in their children's education.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
To continue to invite parents regularly to share children’s achievement and progress, concerns and successes.
To continue to keep parents informed about the school and how they can assist at home.
To continue to share children's learning via HERO so whanau can celebrate their learning journey with them.
HELPING YOUR CHILDREN AT HOME
At the end of Year 2
We expect that most children will know addition and subtraction facts to
- 10 with instant recall
- Doubles and halves to 20
- 10 and facts e.g 10 + 3 = 13, 10 + _ = 17
- multiples of 10 that add to 100
HOLIDAYS and TECHNOLOGY
As the holidays fast approach it's worth thinking about the boundaries you might put in place for device use. It can be tricky working and trying to occupy children, so often the easy default is to let them play on devices. Here's a link to a website with some other ideas to think about. If children are on devices just remember to check in now again and make sure they are on age appropriate games/videos.
ANZAC ASSEMBLY
On Friday of Week 1, Term 2 we will be having an assembly, at 2.30pm in the hall, to commemorate ANZAC Day . Classes will share something they have been doing in regards to ANZAC Day and the Student Leaders will run the assembly. Parents are invited to come along.
