Community Crew News #33
April 12th, 2024
Greetings Conway Community!
As an Expeditionary Learning school, our model connects students to the world beyond school through meaningful service projects. Service learning goes beyond charitable acts, our classrooms incorporate service learning into projects and lessons not as an afterthought but as an integral part of learning. Our many leadership crews are a prime vehicle to teach and take action such as our W.H.O. Crew. This Crew, We Help Others, takes action by organizing collection drives to help those in need. Listen to their call to action here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WGnNvWdHxf9cKnMe4aMOrYkWed2ph-NT/view?usp=sharing.
Please help Who Crew meet their goal of collecting 200 personal hygiene items that will be used to make We Care Kits for people in our community. Did you know that hygiene items are just as important as food donations? This personal necessity is consistently a need at Interfaith Community Center. Please consider donating one or more of the following items:
Shampoo, conditioner, soap/body wash, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, or razors.
Thank you! "And remember, it feels good to do good!"
Reclassification Ceremony
On Friday, April 5th a very special celebration was held. Our Reclassification ceremony honored our seventeen students that have met the rigorous criteria for reclassification. Reclassification is the term used to indicate that an English Language Learner has attained academic English fluency. More specifically, reclassification indicates that an English Language Learner has achieved a level of English proficiency that, without special accommodations related to language, will enable him/her to compete academically with native English speaking peers. In fact, data shows that our Reclassified students often outperform our English only students. Biliteracy is the goal for our all multi-lingual learners. Way to be EPIC students!
High Quality Work
Our EUSD Framework for the Future incorporates four aspects within the learning model, personalized, authentic, competency-based, and inclusive and equitable. These four aspects are all deeply embedded in our Expeditionary Learning model in many ways. One is through our focus on High Quality Work. For students, this means they must demonstrate craftsmanship: create work that is accurate and beautiful in conception and execution. Each month we recognize one student per grade for exceptional High Quality Work and they get to display a beautiful trophy on their desk for the month. This month ART students were honored. These students work is displayed in our library for all to see.
Communication is extremely important to everyone at our EPIC school. Please make sure to scroll all the way through the weekly message. If you miss a message, you can view all communication on our website under "NEWS".
I am grateful for the opportunity to inspire students to discover their unlimited potential through Excellence, Perseverance, Integrity, and Compassion. Together we are creating an EPIC school.
We are in this together and believe, We Are Crew, not passengers.

Better World Day, May 3rd, 2024
As an Expeditionary Learning school, Conway Academy of Expeditionary Learning is thrilled to announce our upcoming participation in “Better World Day,” which will take place on Friday, May 3, 2024.
Better World Day is a national celebration which showcases the incredible, meaningful work that our children engage in, as they are “getting smart to do good” and make a positive impact on our community and the wider world.
Our Conway theme of Better World Day this year is “Literacy Makes Dreams Come True” which is grounded and driven by the work of our 6th Grade Expedition. Our Conway scholars have been developing their Knowledge and Skills in literacy, and beyond, as they strive to produce High Quality Work and develop the essential Habits of Character that will enable them to reach their dreams.
In the coming weeks, your family will be receiving a package with a book and activities to prepare for Better World day. The book, titled Nigel and the Moon, has been selected by San Diego County Library as the “One Book” for all community members to read in 2024. After your family has enjoyed the book together, you will return it to school, with your completed activity.
In addition, we want to invite you to participate in a very special Better World Day this year. It will be even bigger and better than ever before! Some activities to look forward to this year include: a family literacy picnic, as well as opportunities for parents and community members to be a part of the action by either volunteering as guest readers or sharing about your own “dreams come true” with our students. Please reach out to us with any questions and look for a sign-up form that will be coming out soon in our regular weekly Conway Newsletter.
SAFE WALK NEEDS Volunteers!
Conway Academy has a good amount of students that walk to school/home. We are asking our community members to help be additional eyes and ears on the streets of El Norte Pkwy and Conway Drive to promote student safety.
Safe Walk is designed to help improve students safety as they walk, ride their bike, or scooter to and from school. Safe Walk Patrol members will receive training, Safe Walk visor, vest and other materials.
Safe Walk Shifts are as follows:
Mornings;
Monday - Friday
7:35am.- 7:55 am.
Afternoons:
Monday - Wednesday & Friday
2:25 p.m. - 2:45 p.m.

READING WORKSHOP FOR FAMILIES
Families are invited to take part in the virtual workshop focusing on Carlito’s Story. Carlito is faced with some big decisions about who he is hanging out with and how he will pursue his own dreams. His parents have an even bigger decision to make if they are to parent their son in a different style than how they parented their daughters, Graciela and Rosa.
