Hawks Happenings
March 2024
March came in like a LION!
March came in on Friday with freezing rain and the best Book Character Costume Parade! Thank you for your support of our Read-a-Lot Reef read-a-thon this year! We appreciate you supporting your child's reading development. Our celebration day will be held this Wednesday, March 6th. Students who met their reading goal, will earn a ticket to attend the Read-A-Lot Reef celebration held in the Media Center!
Please be reminded that we do not have school on Tuesday, March 5th. This is a workday for teachers.
Now that it is March, it is time for us to switch our focus to MATH! During the month of March, each grade level will be focused on specific math facts and fluency. We appreciate your support at home as students work to further develop their mathematical understanding.
Kindergarten- Counting from 1 to 100 by ones
1st Grade - Single Digit Addition & Subtraction
2nd Grade - Single Digit Addition & Subtraction
3rd Grade - Multiplication
4th Grade - Multiplication
On Wednesday, we will participate in the statewide Tornado Drill. During this drill, students will assume the 'Duck and Tuck' position.
Construction on the main office will begin over Spring Break. If you come to the office during the month of March, you will see lots of boxes because we are packing things up to move to our temporary office location. When we return to school after Spring Break, the main entrance will be on the right side of the school at the K-1 entrance (across from kickball field). Soon, I will share a video to explain how our temporary office will work.
Please pay close attention to the dates listed at the end of this newsletter. These dates could possibly change however we want to give you plenty of opportunity to make arrangements for our end of the year events.
I look forward to us all growing, learning and succeeding this month at NBES!

General School Safety Information
Visitor Procedures
ALL parents and visitors to campus must sign in at the office and obtain a visitor sticker (or a volunteer pass if applicable). Please note that you must sign in even if you are only visiting the cafeteria. Your cooperation in helping us to follow Central Office policy and ensuring the safety of all children is expected and appreciated.
If you have an appointment or scheduled time to be at school in the morning, and wish to walk in with your child, please still plan to follow the established procedure of coming to the office, signing the visitor registry, and obtaining a visitor tag.
Visitors will only be allowed to visit a classroom (during instructional time) if the visitor has scheduled the visit with the teacher beforehand or if the visitor is a scheduled volunteer.
Visitors during Lunch
Parents are invited to eat with their child in the cafeteria; however, as a courtesy to other students, we ask that you do not bring outside food such as fast food and/or sodas into the school cafeteria. Parents should arrive at school in time to get a visitor’s pass and report to the lunchroom hallway five minutes before the scheduled lunch time. Please always let the teacher know ahead of time if you plan to eat with your child.
The daily lunch menu will be read during morning announcements. Occasionally there will be a menu change due to late deliveries or snow days. You can find links to BCS menus here: https://www.buncombeschools.org/page/menus-and-pricing
Should you desire to bring in a special snack for your child’s birthday or another event, please coordinate this with your child’s teacher so as not to conflict with our lunchroom policies. In addition, any food brought into the school to be shared with students must be store bought with ingredients listed. Please allow school staff to distribute snacks due to their knowledge and understanding of students’ allergies and dietary needs. Our school also encourages healthy snacks and choices.
