Solar Eclipse - Monday, April 8, 2024
The solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday, April 8, 2024, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
The times for viewing the eclipse will start at 12:41 pm and end at 3:22 pm. The times for totality are 1:58 pm to 2:07 pm.
If teachers wish to build a pinhole projector to view the eclipse safely, they are welcome to do that.
Many of the glasses available to view the eclipse are not approved by the American Optometric Association and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Glasses must be ISO-certified to meet this standard. Teachers will only be taking classes out to view the eclipse with glasses that meet these standards. The glasses that say ISO 12312-2 and list a real company address have been approved.
There was not an expectation that teachers buy the glasses for their classes and the school/district did not purchase these for the students. If approved devices are not available, the children will remain inside.
Dismissal will run as usual and we will let the students know to not look at the sun in the afternoon. Since we are review expectations in the morning, Mrs. Coate will do a short presentation on this as well.
Erin's Law Presentations this Month
During the day on April 24, 2024, Prevention Educators from the Knox County Child Advocacy Center will be here to give a presentation to our students on Personal Body Safety. They will be reading a book and going over a presentation with the children that is designed for their age group. They will also have a short discussion on safe and unsafe touches, and the “No, Go, Tell” rule. This is not a sex education or body identification talk in any way, only a prevention presentation to help innocent children protect themselves without scaring them.
A child can be abused anywhere and at any time, and abusers do not look different than anyone else. Child sexual abuse is more common than many people would like to think, and its effects can be devastating. One in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused by age 18.
For more information on the presentations at Steele, please read the attached letters in English, Spanish and French. For more information on Erin's Law, visit: https://www.erinslaw.org/.
Kindergarteners participated in an Easter Egg Hunt before spring break. Eggs were scattered in the front of the building for the students to find!
