Marlette Elementary School
April Update - April 8, 2024
Note from the Principal - Mr. Reynolds
Hi everyone,
Students who attend school regularly have higher achievement compared to their peers who experience chronic absenteeism. With that said, we also know that many families have dealt with illness in their households, whether it was Covid, Influenza A, Influenza B, Strep Throat, etc. Some families have experienced multiple illnesses. We appreciate when you keep your child at home to avoid illness continuously spreading throughout the student population.
The state of Michigan recommends a student be considered truant after missing 10% of a school year (10 days per semester). The state does not differentiate between excused or unexcused absences. To keep parents informed, Marlette Elementary sends an attendance letter when a child misses five days per semester and ten days per semester. It's not a threat as much as to keep you informed on how many days your child has missed. Before filing truancy on a student, Marlette Elementary takes multiple steps to help students and parents with attendance before we get to that step.

Classroom Placement Forms 24-25 School Year
Classroom Placement forms for the 24-25 school year will be available from April 15th through May 15th in the elementary school office or can be printed off from the Marlette Community Schools website. The completion of this form is NOT A GUARANTEE OF PLACEMENT. Current year teachers and administration will split classrooms for the next year that creates the best educational environment for all students. Plus, there may be a shift of staff for next school year that may be unforeseen.
M-STEP Testing Important Dates
Every year, students grades 3-5 will be taking the M-STEP (Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress). This test is important to see your child's growth and to show the school's progress to the state. The dates for testing are:
3rd Grade: Tuesday, April 30th and Thursday, May 2nd
4th Grade: Tuesday, May 7th and Thursday, May 9th
5th Grade: Tuesday, April 30th; Thursday, May 2nd; Tuesday, May 7th; and Thursday May 9th
It is very important for students to take the test on the days scheduled with their peers. Some other useful tips include getting a good night's sleep the night before, having a good breakfast, wearing comfortable clothes to sit and focus for multiple hours, and a pep talk to support your student during this testing process.
Students who give their best effort on the M-STEP will get to participate in our Color Run on Friday, May 24th.
