James Madison Fellowship
For Social Studies Teachers
James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation
From Personal Experience
Dear HES Social Studies Teachers,
As the 1996 Madison Fellow for the State of Oklahoma, receiving this award was an amazing opportunity for me as a new teacher! The fellowship paid for all tuition, books, and some housing expenses while I taught full-time and attended classes part-time at the University of Tulsa. It was such a relief not to be strapped with the financial impact of an advanced degree (which I would have pursued anyway), and I was able to pursue coursework that really interested me. It was amazing to expand on the many survey courses that I took in undergrad and apply that new knowledge to what I did in my classroom. Thus, deepening student experiences. It was a win-win!
There are several other experiences that are involved in receiving this award, and you can read about those on the website.
Since then, I have been able to encourage several others to pursue this award - some were named the Madison Fellow for their state. This is a worth-while pursuit if you are passionate about teaching Social Studies. The application process is quite involved, so get started ASAP.
If you are interested in pursuing your Master's Degree in History or Political Science, and deepening your content knowledge in those areas, this may be the open door you have been looking for!
Applications are due March 1, 2015 @ 5 pm Central Time. Best wishes & please let me know how I can help!
