Unit 5: Weeks 1 & 2
Learning Goals:
- I can read and understand a biography.
- I can use text evidence to respond to a biography.
- I know what heroes do.
- I can write an opinion essay.
- I can combine information from two sources.
Key Concepts:
- For these two weeks, our class will be learning about what heroes do. We will discuss what makes a hero or heroine. We will read different texts in the genre of biography.
Vocabulary: Can you name one of your heroes? When you’ve chosen a person, make up a sentence about him or her using one of the list words. Then I’ll make up a different sentence about your hero using another one of the words. We will do this for all the words. You can draw a picture of your hero and then write a sentence using one or more of the words.

I’ll give you some time to look at the words. Then I’ll cover the words. Next I’ll say each word on the list, and you spell it for me. When we’re finished, you can write two headings on a sheet of paper—ow and ou. Then write each word on the list in the column that shows how the sound of ow is spelled.

Spelling Focus Week 2: words that have the oi sound
I’ll say two words on the list. You spell each word and then use the two words in a silly sentence or a poem. When we’ve used all the words, you can illustrate one of the sentences or poems.

Unit 5: Weeks 3 & 4
Learning Goals:

- I can use text evidence to respond to realistic fiction.
- I know what good citizens do.
- I can write an opinion essay.
- I can combine information from two sources.
Key Concepts:
- For these two weeks, our class will be learning what good citizens do. We will discuss how people display good citizenship in their lives. We will read different texts in the genre of realistic fiction.
Vocabulary: Let’s imagine it is Election Day. Every day there are articles in the newspaper about different campaigns. I’ll use one of the words from our list in a newspaper headline about a politician or an issue that citizens have to vote on. Then you use a word on the list to make up a different headline. We’ll do this for all the words on the list.

Spiral Review: I’ll make up a sentence that uses one of the spiral review words from the list below. Then you make up a second sentence using the same word. We’ll do this for all the words on the list.

Spelling Focus Week 3:
Choose one of the words on the list to complete each poem. Then tell me what letters spell the vowel sound you hear in each word.

Now it’s your turn to test my spelling. Ask me to spell each word on the list. If I misspell a word, tell me how to spell it correctly. When we’re done, we’ll do it again and I’ll test your spelling!

Unit 5: Week 5
Learning Goals:

- I know why rules are important.
- I can write an opinion essay.
- I can combine information from two sources.
Key Concepts:
- For the next week our class will be learning about why rules are important. We will discuss which rules we follow in our everyday life. We will read different texts in the genre of persuasive text.
Vocabulary: I will write each word on a piece of paper. Let’s place the words face-up on a table. Next we will read the words together. Then you will choose a word (without telling me which one) and define it. I will hold up the word that matches the definition and read it aloud. If I am correct, I keep the word. Then we switch roles.

Spelling Focus Week 5:
Let’s read the spelling words together. Then I will choose two words and you tell me if they have the same vowel sound. Say “yes” if they both contain the same vowel sound. Say “no” if they do not. For example, myth and thread. (No)
