Happy April 15th - not because it is tax day, but because summer is right around the corner! This edition of Monday Notes is dedicated to summer opportunities for you and your students. Please review below and share with your students.
ENMU Summer Band Camp
The ENMU Summer Band Camp will be held from June 10-12, 2024. Students currently in grades 8-11 can register to participate in this day camp. Students will have the chance to work with ENMU Faculty in small groups, attend sectionals, topic sessions, and band rehearsals. The event concludes with a Closing Band Concert at 4pm on June 12. Registration is $50 and includes lunch for each of the three days. Registration and further information can be found here. ENMU Summer Choir Camp
ENMU Choir Camp is June 2-6, 2024, and is open to students from incoming 9th graders through graduating seniors. Students will have the opportunity to sing in a fabulous choir of over one hundred singers, learn new solos, learn the all-state audition piece for next fall, and take private lessons, conducting, sight-reading, composition, and much, much more. We offer daily master classes, fun times in the pool, a talent show, game night, and movie night. We have a final performance—open to the community—on our final day of camp at 2 p.m. in Buchanan Hall. Students can register here. Cost is only $285 for food and lodging on campus at ENMU. UNM Jazz Combo Camp
UNM Jazz Combo Camp: this is a week-long intensive day camp for middle and high school students with at least one year of jazz band experience, June 24-28, 2024. Students will perform in jazz combos and learn about improvising, jazz theory, ear training, and instrumental technique. Faculty include UNM Jazz Studies professors Glenn Kostur and Chris Buckholz. Southwest Trombone Conference
Southwest Trombone Conference: a 6-day workshop with performances, masterclasses, ensemble rehearsals, and guest presenters, August 5-10, 2024. Our guest faculty artist this year is Amanda Stewart, Associate Principal Trombonist of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Faculty are Jonathan Randazzo, Principal Trombonist of the St. Louis Symphony, Christopher Bassett, Bass Trombonist of the San Francisco Symphony, and Dr. Chris Buckholz of the University of New Mexico. Students are welcome to audit for $75/day, and New Mexico middle and high school students can attend the nightly recitals for free. Click here for more information.
Gordon Institute for Music Learning
The Gordon Institute for Music Learning is hosting 3 professional development levels courses in partnership with UNM July 1 - 12, 2024. There are 3 course offerings are Elementary General Music, Instrumental Music, and Choral Music. The Elementary General Music track is geared for PreK-5th grade teachers. The Instrumental track is for any music educator with an instrumental focus (Band, Orchestra, Guitar, Mariachi, Recorder, Ukulele, etc). The Choral track is intended for educators who focus on choir and singing. The three courses will include daily sections to develop personal musicianship, learn about Music Learning Theory, and practical applications on using MLT in their specific content area (general music, instrumental, or choral). Opera Storytellers Summer Camp
- Write, Compose, Sing, Act, Dance, Design, Perform, Play
- Collaboration between UNM Music Prep School and the Santa Fe Opera, Opera Storytellers is a week-long summer camp for children entering 3rd through 6th grades in the 2024-2025 school year.
- Opera Storytellers is a safe, supportive, and FUN space for students to take creative risks while collaborating to develop and showcase an original 10-minute opera. No previous music or performance experience required.
