Right At School is also providing childcare for the non-student days this month - and it is open to ALL families in the District (not just those who are currently enrolled in their program).

BOARD RECOGNITION

Mountain View Middle School Athletics Director Mitchell Judie presented highlights and student successes from winter sports. Winter sports included co-ed wrestling and girls basketball.

Governor Jay Inslee has declared the week of March 18-24, 2024 as School Retirees Appreciation Week. President Rotter read the proclamation.

POLICY NEWS:

One Policy was presented to the board and approved as presented:

• Policy 4260- Use of School Facilities (1st reading)

Other Business:

• The board approved the 2023/2024 Highly Capable Program Plan.
• Resolution 2023/2024-14; Educational Program Reduction in Force was approved to shut down the culinary program at West Sound Technical Skills Center for the 24-25 school year due to low enrollment and construction.

Please join Pacific Education Institute (PEI) to explore: What does "Civic Engagement" really mean and where is it embedded within the standards? "People demonstrate civic engagement when they address public problems individually and collaboratively and when they maintain, strengthen, and improve communities and societies" (2013, Social Studies for the Next Generation). Come ready to consider where in your instructional units you might develop opportunities for your students to grow skills to become independent, engaged, and empowered community members.

We will collectively evaluate what civic engagement is and how it connects to FieldSTEM and the environment. You will be provided with time to plan how you can facilitate civic engagement opportunities with your students. We’re excited to have student, teacher and/or community partner speakers joining us to share their experiences with you as well!

FieldSTEM: Civic Engagement is a three-part workshop (6 STEM clock hours total - no partial clock hours provided):

• Wed., April 17th, 4-6:00PM - synchronous, onlin
• Asynchronous Assignment to be completed between 4/17 and 5/1 (options!)
• Wed., May 1st, 4-6:00PM - synchronous, online

Each year, the Kitsap County Bar Association sponsors a Law Day Essay Contest for Kitsap County students. The 2024 Law Day theme is “Voices of Democracy.” All high school (grades 10-12) and middle school (grades 9 and below) students residing or attending school in Kitsap County are eligible to participate.

Essays must be received (not post marked) by April 12, 2024 at 4:30 p.m. There will be a total of six prizes awarded, three in each age category. The prizes will be awarded at the Law Day Celebration on the morning of May 10, 2024 at the Kitsap County Administration Building in Port Orchard, starting at 8:30 a.m.

Applications are now being accepted for the “Ellison Education Grants”. Grants are for K-12 public school teachers in Washington State. Over the past six years, the Ellison foundation has awarded 101 grants and $501,000 to Washington State teachers.

Grants will range from $1,000 to $10,000 and be awarded this spring to be used during the 2024 – 2025 school year. Applications must be submitted by March 30, 2024.
