SMS Weekly Update
4/22/24-4/26/24
Dear SMS Families
Dear SMS families,
There are so many fun events happening this week! We will be having an Anti-Vaping Assembly on Monday, the 22nd. We will be hosting the youth speaker, influencer, and illusionist, Rob Holla.
Step Up Day is April 24th from 12:10-1:10pm. 5th graders from SES and GBE will come for a visit and learn about all SMS has to offer. Our 8th grade WEB leaders will help greet the kids and give them a tour. That evening is Step Up Night where parents and guardians are invited to come learn about what to expect for the upcoming year including sports, ASB, the AVID program, health room information, the music program, clubs, and any other questions you might have. Other topics include: developmental expectations, challenges with the transition to middle school, and academic expectations. Step Up Night will be held in the SMS Commons on April 24th, 2024, at 6pm.
Our Marching Band travels to the Junior Apple Blossom Parade on Saturday, April 27th in Wenatchee. Our SMS marching band is made up of 62 sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. Eighth Grade Drum Major, Serenity Vilensky, will be leading the way as the band performs Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it) by Beyonce arranged by Michael Story.
SMS Track and Field has their first meet of the season on Wednesday at South Whidbey Middle School. Go Skyhawks!
The Sultan Technology Student Association is pleased to offer a STEAM Fair on May 2nd, 4pm-6pm, and May 4th, 2pm-5pm. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. Cost to view the fair will be $3 per person. This fee supports STEM and career focused programs at SMS. There is no submission fee for projects or students who participate. Come see what our students have created!
SBAC Testing tentative dates are May 13th-31st. Prepare your students by ensuring they are:
- getting good sleep
- charging laptops every night
- eating breakfast
- attending school daily
Thank you for your help in making this testing time successful!

Spotlight
Staff Soaring Hawk Award
Our monthly staff award is called the Soaring Hawk Award and is issued by the previous month's winner. Assistant Principal, Kim Gilreath, has bestowed the award to a new winner with the following words: "Today I’d like to recognize a teacher who goes above and beyond to support students. This person invests his time and energy both directly and indirectly in areas that he knows will have an impact. He coaches sports, yes, more than one. He shows up regularly to support students in homework club and he serves in multiple leadership roles...
Blair Broughton, your commitment to your students and our school helps us to grow. Thank you for going the extra mile and stepping up in so many ways. You deserve the Soaring Skyhawk Award for all you do!"
