A Note From Dr. Hooks
Dear Hyde-Addison ES Families,
Please see the letter below, sent from the DCPS Deputy Chancellor, regarding the solar eclipse. Classroom teachers would have already reached out to families, regarding any specific class related plans, with the opportunity for you to opt out. Class specific inquiries should be communicated directly to the classroom teacher, as this is not a whole school event.
Note from DCPS:
DCPS Chancellor’s Parent Advisory Board Application
The DCPS Chancellor’s Parent Advisory Board is now accepting applications for school year 2024-25. The Advisory Board provides a monthly space for parents and caregivers to engage with the Chancellor, DCPS leadership, and various DCPS teams to learn about and provide input on current or emergent priorities and initiatives. Application translations are available in English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Amharic. The application will close at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 6. For more information, visit here. Apply today here. Please be reminded that students will not have school next Friday, April 5, 2024, for a DCPS professional development and records day.
Thank you to all of the families who have already enrolled for the 2024-2025 school year. We look forward to sharing the updated numbers and goals over the coming weeks. Please be mindful that reenrolling by early April will significantly support maintaining small class sizes. More information is shared below. There has been several updates to the district process.
As always, please feel free to email hyde.addison@k12.dc.gov, with any school specific inquiries.
Kindest Regards,
Dr. Calvin Hooks, Principal

NEWS & UPDATES
Letter from DCPS Regarding the Solar Eclipse
April 4, 2024
Dear DC Public Schools Parents and Families,
At DC Public Schools (DCPS), we are committed to providing joyful learning experiences in a safe, nurturing environment. Communicating home about events that impact our school communities is critical to maintaining strong partnerships with families.
On Monday, April 8, the partial solar eclipse will take place over DC between 2:04 and 4:32 p.m. While this is an exciting event, I also want to share how our schools will ensure student safety during this event.
Schools may permit students to view the eclipse only if they have the appropriate glasses or use an indirect viewing method. Schools will ensure that students are closely supervised during eclipse viewing to ensure that they follow safe viewing practices. Schools will have alternative activities available in the event that you do not want your child to participate in eclipse-viewing activities.
I want to assure our families that DCPS staff will take appropriate precautions to ensure that students who participate in any activities to view the eclipse do so with proper eye protection and close monitoring.
For more information on the upcoming eclipse, including additional safety tips, please visit science.nasa.gov/eclipses/future-eclipses/eclipse-2024.
The safety and well-being of our students is paramount. If you have questions about specific eclipse activities at your child’s school, including opting your child out of any viewing activities, please contact their school directly. Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Dr. Drewana Bey
Deputy Chancellor, Social Emotional Academic Development DC Public School
