Second Grade
Second grade will be reading about American pioneers. We will be focusing on opinion writing. In math, we have been laying the groundwork for students to learn about multiplication and division. We won’t actually be solving multiplication or division problems but we are learning about equal groups. We have been enjoying activities for Read Across America week. Have an awesome spring break!

Third Grade
Third grade has been keeping busy! We wrapped up Social Studies by learning about the history of Dodge City through the Dodge City Timeline! Then we were able to make our own personal timelines which were presented to our class. Our Science Unit is on Weather, which we are also reading about in ELA! There are a lot of exciting events ahead of us, including our science project on weather. We have also enjoyed some fun parties during our fundraiser and look forward to seeing Mr. Miller on the roof soon!
Fourth Grade
Math: We will be starting Module 6 on Decimal Fractions. The standards we will focus on are 4.MD.A - Solve problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements from a larger unit to a smaller unit and 4.NF.C - Understand decimal notation for fractions, and compare decimal fractions.
Reading: We will continue Unit 3 Module B. In module B, readers will understand that specific strategies can be used to help them understand what they read. Writers will understand that research of both literary and informational texts can be used to convey ideas and information. Learners will understand the effects of changes in nature on both the environment and the people.
For our performance based assessment, students will choose a natural event to research (for example: a hurricane, tornado, flood, volcano, etc.) They will write a news report that explains the effects of the natural event on both living things and Earth.
Social Studies: In our unit this month, students will be completing Chapter 6 on the Southeast region, and also starting Chapter 4 over Economics.
Thank you for your continued support at home!

5th Grade March Newsletter
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we navigate through this bustling semester, it's remarkable how swiftly time is passing! With Spring Break on the horizon and the final stretch of the school year in view, we are fully engaged in ensuring our students are well-prepared for the upcoming state assessments and their exciting visit to DCMS.
Mathematics Update: Exploring Volumes and Shapes in Module 5
This March, we are diving into Module 5 of the Eureka Math curriculum, focusing on understanding volumes and different shapes. This module is particularly exciting as it allows students to explore the concept of volume through hands-on activities and real-world applications. They will learn how to calculate the volume of rectangular prisms and other composite figures, enhancing their spatial awareness and problem-solving skills.
Fun and Engaging Activities at Home:
- Shape Hunt: Encourage your child to go on a shape hunt around your home or neighborhood, identifying various 3D shapes and discussing their volume.
- DIY Geometry: Using everyday items like boxes, water containers, and building blocks, you can create fun projects to explore the concept of volume and surface area together.
- Cooking Together: Cooking is a great way to discuss volume and measurement. Ask your child to help with recipes, focusing on measuring ingredients accurately.
Continuing with our math journey, we will transition to problem-solving with the coordinate plane, emphasizing the importance of mastering multiplication and division facts. We encourage you to engage with your child in practicing these essential skills at home.
English Language Arts (ELA) Insight
We are nearing the completion of our “Understanding the Universe” unit and are excited to embark on “Exploring New Worlds.” This new unit will kick off with the intriguing book “Explorers: Triumphs and Troubles,” sparking discussions on the dual nature of exploration. Students will be encouraged to express their viewpoints through an opinion essay, evaluating the impact of exploration on society.
Social Studies and Science Updates
In Social Studies, we are set to explore the “New World,” focusing on the themes of Freedom and Independence from Great Britain. Meanwhile, our Science curriculum will transition from Space to the fascinating world of Chemical Changes.
A Note of Well Wishes
We wish all our students and their families a wonderful and restful Spring Break! May this time off provide everyone with the opportunity to recharge and enjoy quality time together.
