Levelland ISD's
December 11th, 2023
Hello Levelland Lobos!
This past week has been incredibly rewarding. As you will see below, Levelland ISD is the place to be and we are doing amazing things on a daily basis.
We have two weeks left in the first semester and they will come and go in what will seem like a blink of an eye.
I hope you have a great week.
Go Lobos.
Becky McCutchen
Levelland ISD Superintendent of Schools

Around LISD......
LIFE Grants, Round Two!
The LIFE Foundation hosted another LIFE Grant Event last week. In addition to the eleven grants totaling $5,662 earlier this year, LIFE awarded five more LISD teachers with grants totaling $2340. At ABC, Music Teacher Joanna Forbes and PE Teacher Eve Gerber received money that will help every ABC student learn. At Capitol & South, Robotics Teacher Clara Sanders received money to help build the robotics program through the years. At Capitol, PE Teacher Kristy Sanders was the lucky recipient of money that will help her build children's motor skills. We thank LIFE for helping to fill our classrooms with STEAM activities and helping our students have 21st-Century innovative minds. LIFE operates solely on donations and fundraisers. If you would like to help out students and teachers, you can make a LIFE donation at City Bank or Hockley County School Employees Credit Union. Thank you to Lillian Northcutt for bringing the cheerleaders, Evan Seidel for bringing the drumline, to Superintendent McCutchen, and to the LIFE Board for helping to make these grants a "big deal."
Teacher on the Rise!
Last Week was a week for winners in Levelland ISD! LMS Educator Mrs. Chelsie Spies was honored last Thursday as a Teacher on the Rise Award Winner from Mrs. Baird's Bread and United Supermarket. Each month Teacher on the Rise chooses the winners & then surprises them with a presentation. Mrs. Spies received great prizes including a $100 United Supermarkets Shopping Spree, lunch at the Texas Tech Club & some Mrs. Baird's goodies. The parent who nominated her also received a $50 Visa card. Congratulations to Mrs. Spies and the parent who nominated her! You can nominate your teacher at https://woobox.com/f42uif/ and complete the form. You and your favorite teacher could win! Congratulations to Mrs. Spies for being this month's middle school winner!
LISD Student Advisory Committee
LISD Superintendent Becky McCutchen, along with Director of Curriculum & Special Programs Donna Pugh and LHS Principal Dr. Matthew Birdwell hosted the first Student Advisory Committee meeting at LHS today. This committee is formed so that student input can be heard and considered on all matters of importance. These students represent LHS and nearly every other organization on campus, making this committee have a strong voice. Even in this first meeting, these students were not shy to communicate ideas, information, and concerns that they thought would continue to improve LISD. This committee will meet monthly to accomplish tasks and make things happen! Congratulations to these awesome LHS Leaders! Thank you to our special guests, Board of Trustees Matt Buxkemper and Treva Potter.
Pete Christy's Monthly Lunch
Pete Christy hosted his 96th Monthly Blessing Lunch last week in Levelland. LISD Board of Trustee Treva Potter states, "It is a blessing to hear men of faith who influence our youth. Thank you, Pete, for your tireless effort in promoting each student in the games they love. Your love of our Lord Jesus Christ guides you daily." LISD #expectsexcellence and we are so proud that LHS Principal Dr. Matthew Birdwell also gave great testimony to those in attendance. We are proud to have such an influential leader at LHS and LISD! Thank you, Dr. Birdwell, for all you do for students!
Resource Study
Capitol 4th-grade students are learning the importance of renewable and nonrenewable resources in Mrs. Clara Sanders' class. They learned the effects of coal mining and what it does to our land. They were fully engaged in a STEM activity called "chocolate chip mining!" They experienced a hands-on experiment to learn about nonrenewable resources that have been mined from the Earth for decades. These students are just chipping away to learn!
Decking the Halls!
South Elementary students have been decking the halls! They have been working on all kinds of artistic Christmas ornaments for their South Hall Tree! Mrs. Mary Bara's art class gives students a great outlet for expression each week, as well as builds on fine motor skills. What a great opportunity South offers for students!
Choir Goes Caroling
The LHS Choir is kicking off the Christmas season by caroling for Retired Teachers today! They did a beautiful job! Thank you, Mrs. Bayer, for putting everyone in the spirit.
Liquid Nitrogen Fun!
Double bubble toil and trouble....wait! It's not October... LMS students visited the LHS Garage for a special science experiment put on by the Science Spectrum Scientists! Students learned all about the fun and dangers of liquid nitrogen. Even though liquid nitrogen is less than -300 degrees and immediately freezes tissues, these students didn't mind "blowing smoke" after eating a frozen cracker. They experienced another fun lab to learn that nitrogen is "cool" and they ate up the ice cream that the scientists made. We send out a huge thank you to the Science Spectrum Scientists for this engaging lab!
The Big Chill!
Capitol Elementary School second graders are performing The Big Chill by Sally Albrecht & Jay Althouse under the direction of Music Teacher Susan Draper. Beautiful singing kids! This program hit just right as we are having the big chill this week!
LMS Band Concert
LMS Drones
2 LMS Drone teams competed today at Frenship HS. One of the teams took 4th! Great job Lobos!!

You're Invited to an Open House
Our students enrolled in the Levelland Opportunity Center and CTED classes invite you to their Open House. They have been creating and working all semester on goodies and items for you. This Open House allows our students to apply vocational and communication skills learned in the classroom. The open house will be completely free with appetizers, drinks, and finger foods served by the Lobo Diner and vendor stations set up by LOC students selling Christmas crafts and stocking stuffers. We hope you can attend! Mark your calendar for December 19th from 10:30-1 at 500 Cactus!
