PARAPROFESSIONAL SHARES INSIGHTS INTO UKRAINIAN CULTURE
In an enriching session at the end of February, Mrs. Norby’s College Literature class, a University of Minnesota College-in-the-Schools course, had the unique opportunity to dive deep into the Ukrainian culture, thanks to guest speaker Scott Anderson, a respected paraprofessional with a profound connection to Ukraine.
Centered around the exploration of diverse cultures through literature, the class was eager to learn from Anderson's extensive experiences with Ukrainian culture. Anderson engaged with the students by answering a series of thoughtful questions they had prepared, offering them a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Ukrainian life and traditions.
Among the questions, students were curious about Anderson’s favorite aspects of Ukrainian culture and the notable differences he observed between Ukrainian customs and those in the United States. They also inquired about the changes he witnessed over his visits and the impact of the recent conflict with Russia on the Ukrainian people and their spirit.
Scott's insights provided a poignant look at how historical events shape cultural identity and personal experiences. His stories and observations highlighted the resilience of the Ukrainian people, the beauty of their traditions, and the challenges they face in the current geopolitical climate.
Accompanied by CIS College Literature instructor, Rachel Norby, Scott Anderson stood proudly in front of the Ukrainian flag, a symbol rich with meaning. The flag, with its vibrant blue and yellow hues, represents the vast blue skies over Ukraine’s golden fields of wheat and sunflowers, a testament to the country’s agricultural heritage and natural beauty.
This engaging session not only enriched the students' understanding of Ukrainian culture but also emphasized the importance of cultural empathy and awareness in today’s globalized world. It was a reminder of the power of education to bridge gaps and connect diverse experiences through shared learning and curiosity.
