Throughout the next few weeks, 3rd & 4th grade students will be taking the state assessment called the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP). As we approached the spring testing window, the teachers here at K.C. Ling Elementary have been working hard to help prepare the students for the M-STEP by taking time to work on the state-released practice items and to increase their comfort level with the technology-enhanced features of the test. 3rd and 4th grade students will be administered tests in ELA and Math. Classroom teachers will be sharing additional information with specific testing dates/times. We have had a few cases of pink eye in the elementary school this week. So I thought I’d take this opportunity to make sure you know what to look for with pink eye. There are a few types of pink eye or conjunctivitis. It is a very commonly spread illness in children.

• Viral Conjunctivitis:

• Symptoms: Watery, itchy eyes; redness; discomfort; sensitivity to light.

• It often accompanies common viral infections such as the common cold.

• Bacterial Conjunctivitis:

• Symptoms: Redness; swelling; a yellow or greenish discharge, which may cause the eyelids to stick together, especially after sleep; irritation; mild pain, feels like there is sand in the eye.

• Bacterial conjunctivitis can result from bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pneumoniae.

• Allergic Conjunctivitis:

• Symptoms: Itchy, watery eyes; redness; swelling; a burning sensation; often accompanied by other allergy symptoms such as sneezing and a runny nose.

• Allergic conjunctivitis is triggered by exposure to allergens such as pollen, pet dander, or

It's crucial to note that pink eye can spread easily through contact with infected individuals or contaminated objects. To prevent further transmission, please encourage your child to follow good hygiene practices, including frequent handwashing, avoiding touching or rubbing their eyes, and refraining from sharing personal items like towels or eye makeup.

It can spread easily to the other eye, so avoid using the same washcloth to wipe the noninfected eye.

If your child exhibits any symptoms of pink eye, please keep them at home and consult with a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and treatment. It is recommended that students with symptoms of Pink Eye should be excluded from school or other activities for 1-3 days or per a healthcare provider’s recommendation.
