Additionally, students from all grade levels participated in the Barn Hill Preserve visit last week where they got to learn more about animals from the preserve up close! Students have also been competing in our Spelling Bee and Geography Bee this past month. Congratulations to our student winners!
Be sure to check out all of the highlights from January listed below. We are so proud of our students and look forward to a great February!

Coy Middle School Guidance Office
Believe it or not we are ready to start talking about schedules for the 2020-2021 school year!!! Here are some important dates to keep in mind. During the week of February 3rd, Principals and Counselors will meet with students to review registration during Flex. On Friday, February 7th, registration sheets will be passed out to students and teacher recommendations will be made on the sheets. You and your student will have the weekend to look over recommendations and make encore selections. The registration sheets will be due to Flex teachers on Monday, February 10th. Students will then sign up for recommended core classes and their encore choices online during flex on Wednesday, February 12th.
8th grade students, will also be planning out their Freshmen year schedules!! Ms. Danver, the Counselor at Ferguson Hall will be with us on Monday, February 3rd to go over all of their options. 8th grade will also sign up for recommended core classes and their elective choices online during Flex on Wednesday, February 12th.
8th grade parents are highly encouraged to attend the Parent Scheduling Night meeting for incoming freshmen who will be attending Ferguson Hall next year. The meeting is Wednesday, February 5th starting at 6:00pm at Main Elementary School.
Another important item coming our way is State Testing. This takes place in April. Our testing dates are as follows:
April 15 & 16: ELA Part 1 and 2
April 22 & 23: Science 8 Part 1 and 2
April 29 & 30: Math Part 1 and 2

A couple tips for A+ Attendance Below!
Jackie Stubbs
Jaclyn.stubbs@beavercreek.k12.oh.us
Building Office Assistant
We love seeing our Coy students at school! We understand there are circumstances when your student will have to miss school, but please follow our Attendance Procedures to ensure that you are complying with House Bill 410 to have your student properly excused. Please account for your student every day by emailing or calling the office to notify us of any absences, late arrivals, or early dismissals.
There is an Attendance Tab on our website coy.gocreek.org under the Parent tab with everything you need to know for great Attendance! There is also a section in your students handbook that clearly defines our Attendance polices and House Bill 410 clarification. Always feel free to call or email with specific questions you might have about your child’s attendance.
Students should be reported absent any time they are out of school!
Even though FLEX is at the end of the day, the minutes still count as the school day when taking a student out early.
You can call in a student to the Attendance Line 429-7577 Option 1, or you can email to coyattendance@gocreek.org.
If you call a student in or email an absence you no longer have to send a parent note the following day with the student! This counts as your parent note!
Our start time has changed, but our Tardy policy is still the same and clearly outlined in the Student Handbook. The front doors lock at 7:30 and students must come through the office at this time for a tardy slip. A student is granted a Free Tardy each quarter (because we know life happens), but after that, consequences will ensue per our student handbook.
Remember…overleeping, missing the bus, traffic, inclement weather, parent running late, etc. are not considered an Excused Tardy.
You MUST include a reason for the absence.
If a reason is not included, it is Unexcused.
If a child has an appointment, a specific appointment reason must be given (i.e. dentist, orthodontist, Dr., etc.) Just writing “appointment” is unexcused.
Parent/Guardian may submit 10 parent notes (or phone calls) documenting an Excused Absence reason. After the 10 notes are exhausted, medical notes will be required for absences to be excused.
Reasons for Excused absences include illness, death in the family, pre-approved family vacations (up to 5 days), observation of a holiday, etc. (other reasons may be included). Medical appointments are always Excused with a medical note. Medical notes must be provided within 3 days of absence. After 3 days they will be marked Unexcused.
An absence is Unexcused if your student overslept, missed the bus, running late, car trouble, family vacation without approval (or over 5 days), or student refusal to go to school (other reasons may be included).

Great Things are Happening at Coy Middle School!
- We are continuing to focus on our building theme this year of E + R = O (Event plus Response equals Outcome). We continue to discuss with our staff and students the importance of being in control of our response in order to get the outcome that we want. We continue to have great discussions with our students about two of the "R Factors" - "Pressing Pause" and "Getting Our Mind Right" before we respond to various situations.
- 8th Grade students had to design a better chomper for their hippo using an index card and tape in Mr. McAllister's Science classes. Students competed in CHOMPERMANIA "Survival of the Fittest" 2020 this past month with their newly designed Hungry Hippos!
- Congratulations to all students who participated in the school spelling bee. Everyone did a great job with quite a few difficult words. After two days and twelve total rounds, we have a winner! Third place belongs to Andrew Ketelsen, in Mrs. Scott's seventh grade ELA class. In second place, from Mrs. Duke's eighth grade ELA class, is Madeline Crum. And the new school champion, in Miss Osterfeld's eighth grade ELA class, is Benedict Le. Job well done to everyone!
- MUSE Machine hosted members of the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company who presented a program called, "The Women Behind King" to all of our 6th graders and MUSE members at Coy and Ankeney Middle School.
- Mr. Felipe Nazario-Romero presented in Mrs. Cox's science class on Friday, January 17. Mr. Nazario-Romero gave an engaging, informative presentation on electromagnetism which included real-life examples for the students. We appreciate the time and effort it took for this presentation to happen.
- Congratulations to everyone who participated in our school Geography Bee! Congrats to the winners of the Geography Bee: 3rd: Stephen Wolf, 2nd: Pratisth Agarwal, 1st: Shaki Talley-Muhammad.
- Our band and choir programs went on a tour of Shaw, Main, and Trebein Elementary for the Music Road Show this past month.
- The cast of "Back to the 80's" is ready to begin putting together their upcoming production in March! Be sure to mark you calendars for their upcoming performances in school on March 6th and at BHS at 7:00pm on March 6th and 7th.
- Our Science Department organized a visit from Barn Hill Preserve out of Delaware! Our students and staff got to see and learn about a great array of various animals up close and personal!
