Parents’ Place for Palermo’s Updates
Hay Families,
This is the completion of our first 5 day school week. We continue to see fun and engaging learning taking place and students thriving being with one another. In the near future we are going to begin to turn our attention to bringing back school events and clubs. All events and clubs will follow our Covid safety protocols. The first event we are looking into is Halloween Read Aloud & Trick-or-Treat street. Details of these event will come in the following weeks.
Introducing New Staff
As things have begun to settle down, I want to take some time to start introducing some new staff. In the weeks prior to the start of the school year, there was unprecedented movement of students to and from Englewood e-Learning and CHWS in-person learning, as this has been an extremely difficult decision for many families to make. During that time some CHWS staff moved over to Englewood e-Learning, as there was a significant need given the shift in population. This week I would like to introduce you to two new additions to our front office staff.
Brianne Teichmann - Dean of Students
Brianne Teichmann is our Dean of Students at Charles Hay. She is originally from New Jersey and also spent some time living in Michigan. She is in her second year at CHWS. Last year, she was the Literacy Interventionist and had the opportunity to get to know many of our students. This is her 9th year in education. She has taught K-1 special education, K-2 general education and also at the collegiate level at Michigan State. She brings a strong and empowering passion to reading and loves talking with students about what they are reading and learning about. Her instructional expertise is second to none. We are excited to have her at CHWS in the Dean position as she pushes the dynamic of our team. Make sure to ask her about her Yankee fanship.
MaryKay Speer - Office Manager
MaryKay is the most recent addition to the CHWS team. She is filling a one year position as Megan Walcott has moved over to Englewood e-Learning for the year. MaryKay comes to us with a wealth of experience. MaryKay was born in Chicago and grew up in Whiting, Indiana right on Lake Michigan. MaryKay is a reading enthusiast and a proud parent of two children. MaryKay is a strong supporter of the teaching profession, as her son is actually a Social Studies teacher in Golden.
Adjustments to Change
Naturally when an organization experiences change there are things that slowly surface that need attention. To access MaryKay Speer (Office Manager)directly, you can call (303)806-2421. There have been challenges with our main office line that have been rectified. You can access the main office and attendance lines at (303)761-2433. Also, the addition of the screening process has caused longer wait times before entering the building. To speed up the process, we encourage all parents to screen their child/ren using the rSchool app prior to coming to school. You will find more information on how to do that below.

Parent Involvement Opportunities
Sign Up here Survey Link
- Crosswalk Monitoring- This is the only in-person opportunity we have at the moment. We can use help both during Arrival (7:55am-8:30am) and Dismissal (2:55pm-3:30pm) everyday.
- Virtual Read Alouds- There is no better way to build purpose and meaning for reading than to model the excitement and empowerment one gets from reading. You would coordinate with the classroom teacher and meet virtually with students to read aloud to them.
- Coffee w/the Principal- These will be scheduled in the CHWS Events calendar. This is a more casual question and answer session held quarterly throughout the year.
- Parent Connection- If you are new to the community and would like help connecting with other parents we can help. Let us know and we will connect you to other parents in the community that have been apart of the Hay community.
- PTSA- This committee meets monthly to support teachers in supporting students. This is a great committee to join if you are interested in supporting efforts both Academically and Socially for CHWS students.
- School Accountability Committee- This committee meets quarterly to primarily discuss most current school-wide data and generate ideas to influence positive change in student performance and development.
Thank you all for everything you do! Again, an end to another great week. Have a great weekend!
