MST Weekly Update
March 29, 2024

Good afternoon to all of our MST family members.
Today is the last school day in March. The 3rd quarter closes on Thursday April 4th. Students should be working to make up any missing work, so they are on track to earn credits in all of their classes. Of particular concern are the students who are planning to graduate in June. Letters will be going home in a couple of weeks to the parents/guardians of all potential graduates who are not on pace to finish required classes in time. Students cannot participate in the graduation ceremony on June 15th if they have not met all of their graduation requirements by that date, including the FAFSA form mentioned below..
Summer is not too far away and this week you will see information about two great summer learning activities for our students. Also included this week is information about the prom, an eclipse viewing car show, the Ignyte Conference and the Flourish and Thrive Retreat. A reminder that the deadline is quickly approaching for the Peter Millimet Creative Writing Contest.
FAFSA Reminder
A reminder that a new graduation requirement in the State of NH is the completion of the FAFSA or submission of a waiver indicating that you did not choose to submit the FAFSA. The form is attached below. If you have not done so yet, please complete this form and have your child bring it in to their guidance counselor as soon as possible. Your child will not be able to get their diploma unless this form has been submitted.
Prom Information
As we are about to enter the 4th quarter of the school year, you will notice that several end of year activities such as CTE Recognition Night, Class Night and prom have been added to the calendar below.
This year's prom is at The Farmhouse at Candia Woods on Friday May 10th from 6:30 to 10:00 PM. Announcements will be made when tickets go on sale in late April. May 10th will be a regular school day for everyone, and students must be present in school (and in all of their classes) for more than half of the school day (3-1/2 hours) or they will not be able to attend the prom. There are NO exceptions to this, so please schedule any appointments accordingly. Students who arrive on time for school must be in school until at least 11:20. If they arrive late to school, they must be in school for 3-1/2 hours before they can be dismissed. No students will be dismissed without a note signed by a parent or guardian. There will be a meeting with all students attending the prom during Advisory that day.
Marine Science At The Shoals
Juniors in the Manchester School District have an amazing opportunity available to them this summer. The Marine Science and Sustainability Program is a weeklong program on Appledore Island at the Isle of Shoals. Participants will be fully immersed in learning about the Gulf of Maine and sustainable practices.
- Students interested must have successfully completed biology.
- Students must be entering 12th grade.
- Students selected will earn 0.5 credits for an elective science.
- Students who participate will design a presentation on the Gulf of Maine to present to Juniors during the 2024-25 school year.
Applications must be submitted by May 10th. Complete details are in the attachment below.
APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN FOR MANCHESTER TECH CAMP, (offered by Manchester CREATES), which will be running this summer, July 22-August 2, 2024!
Our camp is for students going into 5th grade all the way up to going into 12th grade. It is focused on Manchester Public Schools and is funded by a Build Back Better grant to further biofabrication and regenerative medicine education for students and teachers in the Manchester School District.
This day camp will be offered right at UNH Manchester and is *free* for students! Middle School students will be placed in week two, (doing a different project each day). High School students choose a project they are interested in from one of the weeks offered. Project descriptions are available on the website. https://manchester.unh.edu/outreach/manchester-creates/manchester-tech-camp
BioPrinting? We have that!
Antibiotics in the Soil? We have that!
BioSensors hooked up to Stuffed Animals that React to Them?! Yes, we have that too!
... and we can't forget BioInformatics, (with wet lab), for kids that love coding and de-coding and Microscopes that students will make to attach to their cell phones!
SPACE IS LIMITED so please like, comment, sign up and/or share to others with students in the Manchester School District so we can expose ALL students, (grade 5-12), to new research in STEAM/STEM.

Solar Eclipse/Car Show
Our National Technical Honor Society is sponsoring an Eclipse Motor Meet on Monday April 8th from 2:30-4:00. The group is reserving 20 parking spaces for MST students and staff to show off their car or motorcycle. During the event, there will be a nearly total (95%) eclipse of the sun at 3:40 PM.
The cost of entry is $5.00. Anyone in attendance will be required to have Solar Eclipse viewing glasses in order to safely view the eclipse. You may bring your own, or they can be purchased in the Griifin's Den school store for $2.00 beginning on 4/4.
Fingers crossed for a sunny day!
Ignyte Conference
The purpose of this day-long event on May 17th is to build community and ignite coalition among youth advocacy groups across the state.
Rooted in diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice, youth advocates will immerse themselves in impactful sessions empowering them to engage in healing, social justice, and effective advocacy strategies. Through interactive workshops, panels and healing experiences offered by youth advocacy groups, local advocacy organizations, and five NH DEIJ Administrators, this conference empowers youth advocacy groups in their efforts to center the lived experiences of historically marginalized identities. Together, we'll create a supportive network that amplifies individual voices, while emphasizing the strength that comes from collaborative group advocacy.
Organized by the NH Pre-K-12 DEIJ Administrators, this gathering is open to high-school youth advocates in the Manchester, Exeter, Oyster River, and Concord School Districts as well as Philips Exeter Academy.
Additional information is in the attachment below.
Flourish and Thrive Retreat
The Flourish x Thrive Retreat on May 22 is a transformative gathering dedicated to creating a nurturing environment for healing, storytelling, and collective learning. This conference is a safe haven where LGBTQIA+ high school youth and allies can come together to share their experiences, find support, and empower one another. Participants will explore resilience, self-acceptance, and community- building themes through workshops, discussions, and interactive activities. Whether looking to connect with peers, gain new insights, or simply be heard, "Flourish x Thrive" is a space where every voice is valued and every story is honored. Join us as we come together to embrace our identities and chart a path towards a more inclusive and affirming future for our LGBTQIA+ youth.
Organized by the Manchester Community College, Queerelective, 603 Equality, and the Manchester School District LGBTQIA+ Advisory Council.

Peter Millimet Creative Writing Contest
MST is pleased to announce that the Peter Millimet Writing Contest is now open and is accepting submissions through the NH Charitable website. All high school students are eligible and encouraged to apply.
The Peter Millimet Creative Writing Fund will award cash prizes – $500 first prize; $300 second prize; $200 third prize; $100 runner(s) up – to Manchester high school students who have demonstrated strong interest in creative writing, with a particular focus on poetry.
Students can electronically submit up to 3 entries (poetry is preferred) for consideration. Winners will be selected based on the overall body of the work submitted, not necessarily a single piece. Submissions will be judged by Alice Fogel, former New Hampshire Poet Laureate.
We encourage the widest variety of students to participate. To enter the Peter Millimet Creative Writing Contest, visit www.nhcf.org/millimet
The deadline for submissions is Friday, April 19, 2024. A list of winners from your school will be sent to you by the end of May so that you might announce them at your school’s award ceremony, or in any other way you wish. Checks will be mailed directly to the students.
Students do not need to be pursuing post-secondary education to participate in this writing contest, nor do they need to be seniors; this contest is open to students in grades 9-12. The awards are cash prizes, not scholarships, for recipients to use however they choose.
Destination College
Granite Edvance is sponsoring an exciting event for high school juniors to kickstart their college planning journey. Students will be able to explore financial aid options, learn about the latest information regarding the 2025 admissions cycle and talk to prospective colleges. Please consider attending Destination College on April 6th from 12:00pm-5:00pm at St Anselm College.
