Bettendorf to Dedicate New Merry-Go-Round in Memory of Jan Glancy
Thursday, March 28th, 11am
McManus Park, 1200 Mississippi Boulevard
A new merry-go-round in the City of Bettendorf’s McManus Park is being dedicated to a woman whose playful spirit is being remembered and celebrated throughout the month of March.
Jan Glancy served as secretary at Mark Twain Elementary School for 25 years and retired in 2014. In August 2023, she passed away unexpectedly at the age of 68. Jan is described by school leaders as a “caring and kind person to everyone she met and always had a twinkle in her eye.” Mark Twain Elementary is spending every school day in the month of March engaging in kindness activities. The school is holding a school-wide assembly on March 28th, Jan’s birthday, to commemorate all those acts of kindness for what they’re calling the Jan Glancy Day of Kindness.
To coincide with this special day, the City of Bettendorf is holding a Dedication Ceremony at
McManus Park, where the new merry-go-round will be officially named in Jan’s honor and
memory. Her husband, Denny Glancy, serves on the Friends of Bettendorf Parks & Recreation
Foundation and worked with the Foundation, the Bettendorf Parks & Recreation Department,
and his wife’s memorial to pay for the new piece of playground equipment that will spread
Jan’s joy around and around for generations to come.

Directors approve the 2024-25 board meeting dates.
BHS Graduation
Dr. Morse and BHS Principal Cleppe had a discussion with directors regarding the graduation venue. Students asked Principal Cleppe to consider moving the 2024 graduation ceremony to the football stadium. Graduation is typically hosted in the HS gym with limited seating for guests and overflow seating in the Performing Arts Center. There are also concerns over issues with the gym's sound system and a need to hire additional services to cover the needs. An opportunity has also come up to host graduation at the Vibrant Area where all other QC high schools host their ceremonies.
Directors indicated that they are open to the potential of moving graduation to the Vibrant Area after 2024. Student and parent surveys will be released to gather interest and insight. View the discussion beginning at 41:06

Accepting 4-Year-Old Preschool Applications
The Bettendorf Community School District is now accepting preschool applications for the 2024-2025 school year. If your child will be four years old on or before September 15, 2024, he/she is eligible to participate.
Funding provided by the State of Iowa in support of the Statewide Voluntary Preschool Program allows us to place children four years of age in local preschool programs. Families of preschoolers can receive preschool education at no charge for 10 hours per week with parents paying for the balance of the attendance time. The local preschools participating include: Ready Set Grow Preschool, KinderCare Learning Center, Lourdes Preschool, Redeemer Preschool, St. John Vianney Preschool and Skip-A-Long Child Development Services.
Bettendorf Community School District provides preschool classrooms at Grant Wood Elementary School, Mark Twain Elementary School and Neil Armstrong Elementary School. Children that meet economic eligibility criteria are given preference in the BCSD public school preschool classes. For more information or to request an application, please call Joyce Meyer at 563-359-3681, email jmeyer@bettendorf.k12.ia.us , or download a preschool application from: https://www.bettendorf.k12.ia.us/o/bcsd/page/preschool
