WMS's CUP OF TEA

Our IAR Family Night
On March 21st, 2024 our students from all grade levels were invited to attend a school-wide event in our 6th grade cafeteria. This event was started with the intention to help parents get their students test scores up by enlightening them on various test taking strategies. During this event we served hotdogs, chips, cookies, and Gatorade all representing quotes that encouraged students to do well on testing. The Hot Dog represents being a “Testing Hot Dog”. The cookies represented being a “Smart Cookie”. The chips celebrated “Chip Chip Hooray it is testing time!”, and the Gatorade fueled your “Powerful Brain”.
After everyone finished socializing and eating their testing snacks, the students were moved into our 7th grade gym where they played a variety of games and participated in many activities. They played tabletop games such as Jenga, Connect Four, Uno, and much more. In the cafeteria where the parents stayed, Ms. Rush-Taylor presented a very informative PowerPoint about IAR testing. This PowerPoint had many tips and tools to help prepare their children for their test. After the presentations, the parents participated in a bingo game led by Ms. Beitz, Mrs Nichols, and Ms. Wicker. Many prizes were awarded to those who filled out the 5 Essential Survey. Including two special prizes that were raffled, a PS5 and an Xbox which were donated by our Superintendent McCall.
This event was promoted by Ms. Rush-Taylor, who also came up with the idea to do an IAR family night. The School Leadership Team came up with the idea to make it a bingo family night. The majority of the event was organized by our talented Mrs. Schafer. We would like to give another special thanks to Superintendent McCall for donating the PS5 and Xbox, and Director Mitchell for supporting the idea through Title 1 funding.

Calming the Chaos
As students, we never look forward to waking up early for the annual IAR testing that seems to last an eternity. The stress, anxiety, and overall feeling of being overwhelmed can make students feel nervous, or even upset. The mood can often feel boring and disheartening, and sometimes there's distractions.
How can we manage all the chaos going on both inside our heads, and outside in our classrooms and hallways? There are things you can do to calm your heart and your mind, like breathing exercises. Our school counselor, Ms. Harris, has some tips for relieving stress in, or outside of school;
Try breathing in and holding your breath for 10 seconds before breathing out.
Get at least 8 hours of sleep every night.
Eat at least 3 whole and healthy meals a day.
Connect with people who make you laugh.
Listen to music that relaxes.
Spend time outside, or exercising (dancing, sports, etc.)
Think about the good things, or people in your life.

Jakobe S.
Jakobe is a student at Wirth Middle School. He really enjoys reading and writing so it's no surprise that his favorite subject to learn is English Language Arts (ELA). He is also a part of Wirth Middle School’s band and plays several musical instruments. His favorite instrument to play is the violin. Jakobe's favorite type of music is orchestral which has a lot of string instruments. Jakobe likes animals, he has a pet dog named Chewy and his favorite animal is the lion. As a hobby, Jakobe enjoys playing the violin and says that when he grows up his dream job is to become a professional violinist. I think that Jakobe would be a great asset to the team because he is disciplined and supportive. We are glad to have him on the team!

Yareli G.
I’m excited to welcome Yareli Gonzalez as a new reporter with our WMS’s Cup of Tea! Yareli is hardworking, inspirational, and outgoing. She was even a class luminary in the sixth grade! A class luminary is a person in the class that makes daily encouraging slides that uplift their classmates and motivates them to work hard. Yareli's background as a class luminary highlights her talent for inspiring others, a skill she seamlessly carries into her poetry and music where she encourages self expression. Yareli is a great fit for our school's newspaper and we are delighted to have her on the team!

Our Student Responses
Check Out The Women Our Students Honored For Women's History Month Below
Amiya W. - My mother because she does things and gets them done such as her job.
Isabella H. - My MOM and my BIG SISTER
Yareli G. - I would like to honor Erica Boyd as my Woman of Influence because although we both think a lot, sometimes we think differently and view the world from different perspectives. This always leads to more thinking of course, but the way the world is, how it works, and how it should be is a subject that could always use more thinking. Thanks Erica
Amiyah A. - I'm honoring my mom she always helped and protected me when I was hurt or in danger she is a very beautiful person who means a lot to me she has more love to give than I'd do anything for her.
