News & Updates K - 12 | Term 1 Week 9 | 28/3/2024
Principal's Welcome
DEAR PARENTS, GUARDIANS, STUDENTS & STAFF
This edition of Frayne Today takes us into the special time of Easter.
Easter is a time where we can feel a range of emotions as we relive the Easter Story. We can reflect on the love of God, who does not ask why but instead forgives, heals, invites, and loves. And then we can practice forgiveness, faith, and selfless love in our actions and pass those on. We can give ourselves time to see God in the Resurrection and give ourselves the same gifts of patience and simplicity that Jesus offers his friends. In this way, we live our way into Easter joy.
Thank you to everyone in our community for the contribution and support you have provided our students and staff. It is that sense of faith, optimism and hope of Easter Sunday that is apparent at our College each day. This is certainly celebrated in this bumper edition of Frayne Today which highlights so much good and celebration in our community.
On behalf of all our staff I wish everyone a joyous, safe and happy Easter and holiday period.
For your children | Mark Antulov | Principal
Staff Updates
THREE key staff appointment decisions have recently been announced.
DIRECTOR OF LEARNING DIVERSITY K-12 | Mrs Sally Matthews
After careful consideration the decision has been made to appoint Mrs Sally Matthews to the position of Acting Director of Learning Diversity (K-12) at the College.
This appointment recognises the leadership and expertise of Sally to create and lead a structure and team for the College's response to student diversity. This key leadership role will be a K-12 role and has membership of the Extended College Leadership Team (CLTx). The role is a strategic leadership role and Sally will now take oversight of staffing, programs and resourcing of our response to learning diversity at the College.
Congratulations to Sally who is a highly regarded leader in the area of student diversity. We are blessed to have such a dedicated and hardworking person in this area of College life which increasingly grows in complexity.
TEACHER IN CHARGE EDUCATION SUPPORT | Mrs Alicia Doogue
Mrs Alicia Doogue has been appointed to the position of Teacher in Charge of Education Support. Alicia will resume many of the responsibilities of Sally Matthews in the day to day running of the Education Support Program at the College. Alicia will undertake this role supported by the leadership of Sally Mathews in the role of Director of Learning Diversity.
LEADER OF LEARNING CULTURE | Mr Paul Columbini
We have initiated a number of key reviews and soon we will be receiving recommendations from the various committees. To help support and guide the final recommendations, Mr Paul Colombini has been promoted to the Extended College Leadership Team (CLTx) in the role of Leader of Learning Culture.
Paul will provide wisdom and understanding of the unique Frayne Culture to help inform decisions so that the deep culture of the College is preserved. As well as being a member of the Extended College Leadership Team, Paul will work closely with the Secondary Leadership Team and Academic Council to continue to develop our learning culture at the College.
Appointing Paul to this role was a very easy decision. His credibility, integrity and passion for our College to be the best it can be is recognised by everyone. He has lived experience of 33 years of the 34 years of Ursula Frayne Catholic College and has a sound understanding of the College history and core culture. I am delighted that Paul has accepted to take on this important role.
College Celebrations
SPECIAL EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS
Congratulations to Year 12 students, Hannah Ozaraga, Hannah Toh, Kornelius (KC) Vergara and Wesley West who put themselves forward to become Special Eucharistic Ministers to enable them to help with the distribution of Communion at school masses.
On Friday they were commissioned by Fr Bello at a special Mass to celebrate their intensive training program. We look forward to them serving our community.
We believe this group of students are the first Student Eucharistic Ministers of the College. This is a wonderful achievement we are all very proud of.
NEURODIVERSITY PARENT & STUDENT EVENING
Last week the college joined the worldwide initiative “Neurodiversity Celebration Week”, culminating in the celebration evening on Friday for parents and students across both campuses.
The evening provided the opportunity for parents to connect and share in their experiences and celebrate the strengths of their children.
Thank you to Xavier Weddikkara and Robert Nicolosi, Class of 2023, for sharing their experiences and big thanks to Roshan Weddikkara, Nicole Filev – Occupational Therapist, Rocky Bay and Jacinta Reynolds – Inclusivity Cultivator, iDoba for answering parents questions as part of a panel.
Whilst parents were connecting, their neurodivergent children and siblings were being looked after on campus by a team of staff and volunteer students. Some of the student activities included an Art Collab, led by UFCC teacher, author and artist Maria Blackman; friendship bracelets, chewable necklaces and calming bottles. Students ate a pizza supper in the beanbags and returned to their parents after a Friday night of creative fun and socialising with their peers.

RIDE2SCHOOL
On Friday a large number of students on both campuses rode their bikes, walked or scootered to school for Ride2School Day. This is Australia’s biggest celebration of active travel and a great way to show our children an easy and healthy way to incorporate exercise into their day. The Balmoral Street Campus students even had a visit from the local Kensington Police who helped to hand out stickers.
We sincerely thank the Friends of Frayne for their valuable contribution with the donation of museli bars and fruit from Coles, also the Rebel gift vouchers for some lucky winners.
Let’s keep our feet walking or pedaling as we head into the holidays and Term 2.

YEAR 12 RETREAT
This year’s retreat was a well organised event which resulted in a great time for the Year 12’s to reflect upon their journey throughout Frayne and connect as one cohort.
Organised by a handful of students from our year group, we made sure this retreat was more personal and orientated towards our peers. This included choosing when we arrived at the venue - which ended up being a later start so more students could arrive by their own means of transport - as well as more having personalised activities and choosing the food for the day. We also had the privilege of being led by a new group from the Youth Mission Team, who definitely over-excelled in making this time a very memorable experience for everyone.
The particular focus for this retreat was on the value ‘Resilience’, showing us all the importance of persevering and staying confident and true to yourself in all that you do. By giving examples of how we can be resilient every day by overcoming challenges and thinking outside the box, as well as through the Team’s shared stories, it really expressed the need for resilience in our own lives. This message was quickly put into practice when cooking the day’s dinner, where, even though the public barbecues failed to work, we stayed resilient, borrowed a nearby BBQ and finished cooking in time for everyone to grab some food, chill, and wrap up the day!
This year’s retreat was an amazing experience for all of us. We are very grateful to be able to have events like these at our school.

YEAR 6 RETREAT
Below are some reflections from Year 6 students on attending their Retreat:
On Tuesday 19 March we had the Year 6 Retreat to the Schoenstatt Shrine in Armadale which was lots of fun and enjoyable. We learnt a lot of interesting facts about Sister Lisette and the Shrine itself. We had three memorable activities that included making mini shrines and colourful rosary beads. The reflection in the Shrine was special as the Shrine is a replica of the original Schoenstatt Shrine in Germany. All the Year 6 students had a blast, and it was an unforgettable experience.
Joey Sims and Levi Hadarin
On 19 March both Year 6 classes went to the Schoenstatt Shrine. It was really fun. We learnt a lot about Sister Lisette’s life and how she became a Sister. In the Shrine we got to write our sins in the sand and be forgiven by God. We got to watch the show about Sister Lisette, it was very interesting and inspiring. The activities were also fun. We made a mini shrine and got a rosary bead bracelet.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
On Tuesday 19 March, we as the Deputy and Head Girl attended the annual International Women’s Day breakfast held by the Soroptimist International of South Perth. This was a wonderful experience that allowed us to connect with other young female leaders from schools in the Metropolitan area.
Additionally, we also got to meet and hear the stories of many women who are members of the Soroptimist International group, which was a very insightful experience. One of the most touching stories we heard that morning was told by a woman who volunteered on one of the Mercy Ships on an expedition to Africa. Mercy Ships provide urgent medical care and surgeries to those in less developed countries who do not have the funds nor access to these urgent medical operations. Additionally, we were also entertained by Perth Harmony, who performed an array of acapella songs for our entertainment.
We were very honoured to be invited to this very special event, and were especially thankful to Vida for extending an invitation to us both.

Faith & Sharing
EASTER
Easter is the oldest and most important feast for Christians and the centre of the Church’s liturgical year. It is not one more feast but the "Feast of Feasts". Easter is the celebration of the Death and Resurrection of Christ. This is a day full of joy because it confirmed and fulfilled all the works, promises and teachings of Christ. Moreover, death is not the end, Christ has won and as He was raised from the dead, our bodies will also be raised to the new life with Christ.
Pope Francis, in last year’s Urbi et Orbi message reminded us of the importance of the Resurrection of Christ:
“May this Easter be for each of you, dear brothers and sisters, a passage from affliction to consolation. We are not alone: Jesus, the Living One, is with us, forever. Let the Church and the world rejoice, for today our hopes no longer come up against the wall of death, for the Lord has built us a bridge to life. Yes, brothers and sisters, at Easter the destiny of the world was changed, and on this day, which also coincides with the most probable date of Christ’s resurrection, we can rejoice to celebrate, by pure grace, the most important and beautiful day of history. The Gospels speak of the haste with which, on the morning of Easter, the women “ran to tell the disciples” (Mt 28:8). Mary Magdalene “ran and went to Simon Peter” (Jn 20:2), while John and Peter himself then “ran together” (cf. v. 4) to the place where Jesus had been buried. At Easter, then, the journey quickens and becomes a race, since humanity now sees the goal of its journey, the meaning of its destiny, Jesus Christ, and is called to make haste to meet him, who is the hope of the world”.
Let us hasten towards the Risen Lord on our journey and He will bestow the peace and the harmony we are looking for in our lives. Happy Easter!
