The Llewellyn Friday Flyer
March 22, 2024
Dear Families,
It has been another exciting week at Llewellyn! While 5th grade visited Oaks Bottom and are voraciously writing their famous 5th Grade Play, and Kindergarten went on their first Field Trip to The Triskelee Farm, 3rd grade prepared for their incredible Music concert. However, the highlight of the week was PJ/Stuffy Game Day! Students had a blast playing everything from board games to class kickball games outside. Some grade levels organized a variety of activities students could do and allowed their students to go between classrooms to enjoy more than one activity. I want to thank our teachers for their creativity (and patience) and the PTA for this wonderful day as well as the snacks and treats they provided as a special bonus! What a way to send students off to Spring Break with wonderful memories!
On a less exciting note, I want to bring your attention to an important matter: Drop Off and Pick Up and the safety issues on 14th Avenue. A short time ago I met with members of PBOT, Safe Routes to School, SMILE, and concerned parents to discuss the heavy and sometimes unsafe traffic in the area in front of the school building. With a priority of keeping everyone safe, the team analyzed current practices and came up with some possible solutions to improve safety and help the flow of traffic. Please read the attached documents. A map is included to help illustrate the new routes suggested.
By AVOIDING the RED ZONE, we can all be safer!
I hope you all have an enjoyable and safe Spring Break! I look forward to seeing everyone and hearing about all the great adventures when we return! Don't forget! Friday, April 5th there will be NO SCHOOL. Teachers will be preparing Q-3 Report Cards and planning for the last quarter. Report Cards will be sent home on Friday, April 12th!
Thank you, ☀️Sunshine Committee for the amazing picnic lunch! Our hearts and tummies are full! ❤️
Warmly,
Principal Pam

The Mason Bee Program-Debbie Conrad, A Bee's Best Friend
Hi! My name is Debbie Conrad. I am an environmental educator here in Portland and I
manage the Mason Bee Program at Llewellyn. Now that spring nesting season is in full
swing, I thought I would take this opportunity to tell you more about this science
program.
The Mason Bee Program is fully funded by the Llewellyn PTA and provides hands-on
science lessons to every student at the school. Students learn the importance of plants,
pollinators, and our interconnection to the natural world. Starting from kindergarten all
the way to 5th grade, every student receives enriching science lessons throughout their
time at Llewellyn.
During the first year of the program, all students explore mason bee habitat, life cycle,
and our interdependence with bees. From there, lessons build upon concepts students
have learned from the previous years. Another key aspect of the Mason Bee Program is
that, every spring, the entire school raises mason bees in the Llewellyn Garden.
Through this activity, students learn about life cycles, interconnection, and community.
Science topics by grade level:
● K - 5th grades: Life cycle of a mason bee and their connection to the seasons.
● 1st - 5th grades: Investigating mason bee nests they raised last spring.
● 1st grade: How humans mimic mason bees to help us live our lives.
● 2nd grade: Pollination and seed dispersal.
● 3rd grade: Solitary versus colony bees.
● 4th grade: Flower structure and how flowers are designed to attract pollinators.
● 5th grade: How to create a healthy habitat for mason bees.
The mason bee nesting season is from March through June. Next time you are at
Llewellyn, be sure to check out the nesting boxes in the garden!
Thank you to the Llewellyn PTA, teachers, and staff for their continued support of this
science program!
School Spirit Days
Every Friday will be a School Spirit Day. Students and staff are encouraged to wear their Llewellyn gear new or old. One Friday per month will be a fun theme. On 4/26 it will be Rainbow Day!
Rainbow Day- Friday, April 26th
News from the PTA
Welcome back everyone!
PTA Happenings
There are still plenty of volunteer opportunities to spruce our school garden! There are several ways to help. There are several super critical construction projects like replacing the shed roof so there is no leaking inside and so our Mason bee houses are protected from the rain, installing the picket fence, and removing the old bed frames. We also need some classroom garden liaisons to connect with teachers to use the garden in classroom projects and general garden upkeep.
Our Earth Day event will be on April 20 and we need volunteers to be leads for the garden work party and Earth day themed crafts, games, and activities. Please check Konstella for the sign up to give our garden some spring love and help with this fun event!
The lost and found rack and baskets have been cleaned out! We have done our best to go through the entire lost and found and allow our community to look through all of the lost items to claim them. We held out things with names and took the rest to be cleaned before we will officially donate them to the PPS Clothing Closet and our school’s clothing closet for clothing emergencies. Thank you to our treasurer, Lindsay Lopez, for taking on the cleaning of all these garments and thank you to everyone who helped to organize the racks and help some of the things find their owners. As a reminder, please try to put your students’ names in their belongings. We were able to return so many items to lockers and parents because of this.

From The Foundation
Principal Pam's message was clear, PPS budget cuts will impact Llewellyn next year. Three classes will be impacted with larger class sizes.
The purpose of the Llewellyn Foundation is to raise funds throughout the year to provide additional staff positions to the school. Principal Pam has outlined her plan for additional support that will go to the whole school:
1. Looking for 2 part time EAs
2. Fund part time counselor for students
In order to make this happen, we need support from parents to fund these additional positions. We are calling on you to donate now. You can do so in the following ways:
1. One-time or recurring donation directly to the Foundation. Any donation helps.
2. Get involved - join the Foundation today to help fund raise.
3. Participate - go to dine outs and upcoming events.
You can DONATE HERE. Funds raised through June will go towards hiring a half-time counselor and 1-2 educational assistants in the 24-25 school year. Thank you to all those who have been able to contribute so far.
