"Heart of a Husky"
Dear MRE Families,
Recently, we began a new initiative here at MRE to promote kindness and our sense of community. We are calling this initiative “Heart of a Husky.” It began last month with every classroom reading the beautiful story of "The Boy, The Mole, The Fox, and The Horse," where the characters discovered that home is not only a physical place but also a feeling of comfort and safety found in the company of others. Here at MRE, we strive to be each other's home away from home, where every individual feels valued, supported, and included.
At the end of February, we had a school wide assembly where we talked about what it means to have the “heart of a husky”. Specifically, we talked about embracing kindness, compassion, and unity and just as the husky embodies these qualities we can exemplify these traits in our everyday actions too. We are not just a school; we are a community, a pack of MRE huskies working together to create a warm and welcoming environment for all.
In the assembly, we also introduced our buddy classroom initiative. Just like huskies paired together to pull sleds, each classroom has been paired with another to work collaboratively to promote kindness, build relationships, and foster a sense of belonging within our school community. These classroom partnerships will continue through the remainder of the school year and will include multiple opportunities for students to get together for shared activities and experiences.
In addition, we are recognizing and celebrating students who demonstrate the heart of a husky through their words and actions. Each MRE staff member has “heart of a husky” cards that they can give to students who demonstrate the qualities of kindness, teamwork, respect, acceptance, or enthusiasm for learning. Students can choose to display their cards at school or bring them home to share with their families.
We hope you will join us in celebrating our students and their efforts to make MRE the best school it can be. Together, we will build a stronger, more compassionate community—one act of kindness at a time.
With warm regards,
Scott Blanchard

MCAS
Next week our MCAS testing window opens for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. They've been working hard all year and are prepared to demonstrate their learning. In order to help them do their best and in support of making the testing experience a positive and successful one we offer these helpful tips:
Students should try to get a good night's sleep the night before the test
Eat a hearty breakfast
Please be on time to school to avoid feeling rushed
Bring a quick healthy snack to eat
Bring a water bottle (or 2)
Bring an optional second snack to eat at the end of the day, after testing is over.
Students can bring extra books to read after they are done with their test
Encourage your child to do their best
Thank you for your ongoing support. Please contact the MRE office if you have any questions.

Health Update
With the mild winter, and the prospect of spring weather soon, we are expecting an early and active tick season. We have already had reports about ticks in the community. As our days begin to get longer and we spend more time enjoying the outdoors and athletic fields, here are a few tips to help prevent tick bites:
Avoid wooded and brushy areas with high grass and leaf litter. Stay on trails while hiking.
Wear light clothing, long-sleeved shirts, and long pants, since ticks are easier to see on light clothing. Place your white socks over your pant legs.
Perform tick checks on yourself and your children after being outdoors. Have someone check areas you cannot see. Small ticks are hard to notice and prefer underarms, in and around ears, between legs, around the waist, and hair.
Check your pets for ticks too.
Ticks can enter homes on clothing and then attach themselves to people. We encourage you to throw clothes in a dryer on high heat for 30 minutes to kill any ticks remaining on clothes, backpacks, stuffed animals, etc.
