Steadfast Service
Earlier this month, Dr. Joel Strohecker and Gustavo, along with Paco and Priscila, traveled together out to Chiquimula to attend to patients in the clinic. This has become a routine every 6 weeks. While there, they attended to about 77 patients in the three and a half days they were there. Also attending to patients was our dentist collaborator, Jovita Toledo, as well as the midwife who is partnering with us through Casa Materna. The midwife focused on visiting with the schools in the areas to deepen her relationship with the teachers, who are seen as the "gatekeepers" into the communities that we serve.
Meanwhile, Francisco and Ingrid were receiving and caring for individuals relying on Kairos House for shelter, food and comfort. The hot temperatures make no difference in the number of people we serve, but does create challenges in providing a comfortable ambiance for the people to rest in. Laminate roofing and minimal air flow can make for an uncomfortable space. This is all the more reason we are grateful for some of the restorations to the back patio as it allows our house guests to enjoy a bit of outside.
In between all of these activities, the following is going on "behind the scenes":
- summer groups are well underway with their planning, as are developments and conversations with new teams for future trips
- newsletters are being formulated and edited
- correspondence is occurring between the ministry and supporters
- year end tax summaries and appropriate forms are being filed with the government to maintain our 501 (c) 3 status here in the USA
- fundraising is occurring to support the ministry, it's programs and it's missionaries
- meetings with different organizations are occurring to discuss potential collaboration
While sometimes it may not seem like we have a lot to share, it does not mean that there is not a lot going on within and around the ministry. God is always at work and is always prompting us and moving us to do His work. There is a steady growth that is occurring in His timing (Kairos) while we continue to move and work at a faithful and steady pace.
Thank you for your steady and faithful prayers and financial support!
Did You Know . . .
Micro and Macro Cultures
Often times, when we think about another country, we erroneously lump everyone in that country into "one culture". It is a somewhat innocent action, as, most likely, that country operates within different "cultural norms" than our own. For example, we may think of language or food or religion when thinking of a people group from a specific country.
However, we need also consider the many smaller cultures that exist within a country - no matter how small it may be!
For example, in Guatemala, there is a macroculture that exists where you may identify the people who live there as Spanish speaking and may imagine their physical features to be a certain way and you could have a basic understanding of their customs and traditions. But, within the large scale "Guatemalan" culture, there are many, many, many microcultures - there are over 22 languages, each with various dialects. There are different styles of clothing and houses; different customs and traditions. To say that one person from Guatemala is like any other is the same as saying an individual from New England has the same cultural makeup as an individual from Baton Rouge.
Whenever a group travels to work with us in Guatemala, one of our first challenges towards them is to consider the cultural shocks that will occur. Not just the "macro" of USA to Guatemala - but, from leaving their town, their state, their region of the USA and entering another country. From there, considering their experience in a foreign metropolis then traveling to a more rural area and within that area, exploring smaller communities whose inhabitants have no basis of understanding for the other cultures off of their mountain.
The expanding and narrowing funnel in which to consider all of these different cultures can be overwhelming, and a lot to process. Yet, it is also a beautiful marvel to consider how all of these differences weave together to make one, large, colorful tapestry.
