Other Reminders
Students with early release are reminded they must depart from campus at the end of their last scheduled class of the day. If they are staying for any reason, they must check in and out through the attendance office.
Names of students in need of credit recovery are being submitted by teachers. Families, please remind your students of the importance of completing quarter 2/semester 1 work as soon as possible so they can gain the knowledge they've not yet mastered and not get too behind in quarter 3. Additionally, please be reminded that students that are referred for credit recovery during the year and do not complete it are not eligible for end-of-year recovery opportunities.
2023-2024 Yearbook
The yearbook is available for purchase now! You can go to www.yearbookordercenter.com and enter our school code: 13848. Be sure to check out the options for purchasing senior ads as well. Senior ads are a great way to celebrate your child and give you and your family a printed memory that will last forever! To order your ad, go to www.yearbookordercenter.com and enter our school code: 13848; you'll then navigate to "Start Your Ad". Prices range from $60-500 depending on size of ad.

LCPS Opioid Awareness Task Force
We encourage parents to have a conversation with their students about this and to review the drug and alcohol abuse prevention resources available on the LCPS website. Please also review the following information.
LCPS will be adding more monthly information sessions to the calendar and continuing to emphasize the dangers of fentanyl, opioids and other drugs with our students. The next event is February 15 at Woodgrove High School. Click here for the flyer with details.

Elevate and Celebrate!
Indoor Track
The Girls Indoor Track team won the Catoctin District Championship by over 20 points last week! Anna Hardiman led the way, scoring 40 points for the team. She won the 300m dash, the 4x400m relay, the 500m dash, and the high jump. Other district champions include Sydney Perez (shot put), Brie Breutsch (long jump), and the 4x400m relay consisting of Anna, Lana Sakhel, Jada Jones, and Aleeza Awan. Aleeza also qualified for freshman nationals in the 55m dash! On the boys side, the district champions were Elton Woodard (shot put) and the boys 4x400m relay of Michael Clark, Cazz Veney, Nick Rini, and David Kayembe. CONGRATULATIONS!
Academic Scholastic Bowl Team
The JCHS Academic Scholastic Bowl Team won their regional tournament last week, going undefeated for the title. They will compete for the state championship in Williamsburg on February 24.
Gymnastics
Congratulations to the gymnasts below whose district performances qualified them for regionals:
Peyton Reed (2nd in vault, 7th in beam)
Ava Wergley (6th in bean, 7th in floor, 8th in vault)
Hannah Lai (1st in bars, 3rd in vault)
Choirs
We are so proud that 16 of our choir students were accepted into District Chorus this year. These students had to compete individually on a District wide level and won! The prize for winning Districts is the opportunity to sing in our District Chorus. In addition, we had 7 of the 16 students receive a perfect sight-reading score. You are invited to attend the District Chorus Concert February 17 at 3:15pm at Rock Ridge High School.

DECA GotSneakers Collection and Fundraiser
GotSneakers is an organization with a mission to reduce the amount of sneaker waste by donating old sneakers or recycling them responsibly. By donating your old sneakers you could make an impact on the world while also lowering the cost for future DECA fees. The type of shoes we accept are: running shoes, basketball shoes, gym shoes, rubber cleats, lifestyle/casual shoes, and hiking shoes. Shoes can be donated to Mrs. Brown's room (1308) or in the box by the front office. If you have any questions or concerns please contact Mrs. Brown (Shannon.brown@lcps.org)
College and Career Center News
For SENIORS and their parents -- If you are college bound or planning to attend Northern Virginia Community College or any trade school, you will be REQUIRED to complete the FAFSA.
The FAFSA opens on December 31, 2023. Since the FAFSA is opening so late this year due to revisions, you should try to complete the form within the first two weeks of January (not required, but strongly encouraged). Your student will not receive a Financial Aid Package from whatever school they get admitted to until the FAFSA has been submitted.
JCH, in conjunction with Freedom and Lightridge, will be having a FAFSA workshop on February 15th Mark your calendar!

BEFORE January 9th, you will want your FSA ID to be completed, and for you to make an attempt to complete as much as you can of the FAFSA. What you don't complete, or don't understand, that is what the workshop if for. See you there!

Loudoun Education Foundation Scholarships
The LEF announced their 2024 scholarships for high school seniors. Be sure to read the qualifications carefully, as they pertain to education.
Elaine Avington Griffin Unsung Educators Scholarship
This scholarship awards $1,000 to one high school senior whose parent or guardian is a current LCPS classified employee in one of the following positions: Custodial, Food Service, Maintenance, Transportation or Warehouse. Funds may be used for any post-secondary education, including technical and trade schools.
Qualifications:
- Must be a student of a current LCPS classified employee
- Parent or guardian must be in a qualifying LCPS position (listed above) for at least five consecutive years.
Diversifying the Teaching Workforce Scholarship
Loudoun Education Foundation's largest scholarship awards $12,000 to three recipients. This scholarship is dedicated to aspiring educators from under-represented populations in the teaching workforce. The scholarship will pay $1,500 per semester directly to the undergraduate university for up to four years.
Qualifications:
- Must indicate the demographic represented.
- Must attend a four-year college or university preparing for a career in education.
- Must be interested in becoming an educator and returning to seek employment with LCPS.
- Must obtain a 3.0 GPA or better in the course(s) taken.
Service: Knights Give Back
Students can click HERE or the button below for codes to join their service course if they haven't yet. In the course, students can access this year's log as well as service opportunities that are shared with the school throughout the year.
Athletics
Spring Tryouts are around the week of February 19-23. VHSL Physicals are due to the Athletic Office no later than February 16. Register at johnchampesports.org
PTSA
GRADUATING SENIORS: APPLY NOW FOR THE PTSA SCHOLARSHIP!
We are proud to offer four $500 scholarships to graduating seniors planning to enter and attend a university, college, or technical school in the fall following graduation. Completed scholarship applications must be submitted to Karen King, Career Center Specialist, by 4:18 pm on Thursday, February 22, 2024. You may email or drop off the completed application to JCHS Main Office. Applicants must be JCHS PTSA members as of January 19, 2024.
NEW LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITY: PTSA STUDENT REPS
Is your student looking to serve as a leader? We are launching a new opportunity for rising 9th, 10th, and 11th graders to become Student Committee Representatives to the PTSA Executive Board. As a PTSA Student Committee Representative, those selected will:
- Be an active member of the Board - a unique resume addition!
Share their ideas with the Board and help bring them to life.
Survey their grade-level peers and voice ideas and opinions on topics that will help the Board plan events and activities.
Assist in planning PTSA-sponsored events, including organizing student volunteers and encouraging participation from fellow students.
Participate in the annual Membership drive and encourage classmates and their families to join PTSA.
We are now accepting applications for rising 9th, 10th, and 11th graders.

New, Optional Service Provides Report of Student Website Access on LCPS Devices
ew this school year, LCPS is introducing an optional and free service for families called Lightspeed Parent Portal. Families who elect to use this service will receive weekly reports by email that list websites their student(s) are accessing when using their LCPS-issued Chromebook or laptop.
