Superintendent's Notebook: Music Provides Students with 'The Keys to Learning'
Every month, there is a plethora of national days to be celebrated. March is no different. As a bit of a trivia nerd, one stood out to me: International Bagpipe Day, which is March 10.
Interestingly, while the bagpipe is most commonly associated with Scotland, many music historians trace its origins back to ancient Egypt.
Despite its unique sound and appearance, the bagpipe is a woodwind instrument. The player blows or pumps air into the bag and then squeezes the bag, sending air through four pipes. Three are called drones, and each drone produces a different note. A fourth pipe, the chanter, has holes that the bagpiper plays to create the melody. All four pipes have reeds, which vibrate and produce a sound when air passes through.

Safe Gun Storage Saves Lives
Did you know that safe gun storage practices can result in an estimated 85% reduction in the risk of self-inflicted and unintentional firearm injuries among children and teens?
Did you know that 75% of active shooters obtain their gun from a home of a parent or close relative?
Did you know that, according to Maine Law, storing or leaving a loaded firearm on premises where a child is likely to gain access to that firearm, and the child in fact gains access to the loaded firearm and uses it, is considered endangering the welfare of a child and is a Class D crime?
Did you know that biometric gun safes for handguns can be purchased for under $75? Gun safes for rifles can be purchased for under $150. And cable locks can be obtained free at many gun safety events and the Brunswick Police station.
Please do your part.
This message is part of our partnership with the Brunswick Police Department to promote safe gun storage. More information on the school district’s Secure Gun Storage Resolution can be found here.
