5-Essentials Student and Parent/Guardian Survey
In Case You Missed It...
Illinois 5Essentials Survey is Open!
Parents/guardians all 10 of our schools are encouraged to take the Illinois 5Essentials Survey now through March 29, 2024: http://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/survey/parent/
The parent survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. You may skip questions you do not wish to answer, but the survey must be completed in one sitting and cannot be retrieved once it is submitted. Only one parent/guardian per household may fill out the Brooks survey.
GBMS current percent of parent/guardian completion as of 3/18 is: 11%.
School-level reports will only be generated if at least 20 percent of our parents/guardians complete the survey.
Thank you for participating in this important endeavor and for your continued support of our schools and the children we serve.
The classic story tells of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed to his former self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity.

GBMS Yearbook - Student Name
We understand how important it is for our students' names to be correct in the our school yearbook. In planning our yearbook, we use students rosters from PowerSchool. If you and your child wish to have their first name appear differently than what appears in PowerSchool, please complete this form by Friday, March 22nd.
Please contact Meagan Pabellon (MPabellon@op97.org) if you have any questions. Thank you.
Illinois Science Assessment - 8th Grade Only
8th Grade students will be participating in the Illinois Science Assessment in their Science classes starting April 4th through April 12th.
REUSABLE BAG DRIVE--Rainbow Revolution
For the second year in a row, we will host this reusable bag drive from March 11th-March 22nd. Bags can be turned into the main office (box labeled). The reusable bags will be donated to the Center on Halsted, which is the Midwest's largest LGBTQ+ social service agency. In particular, they also do a lot to support LGBTQ+ youth, many of whom are sadly homeless due to a lack of acceptance in their homes.
From our direct contact at the Center:
"The reusable bags are specifically going to the drop-in program. Many of those youth are completely unhoused, staying in shelters, and/or living in the streets. That’s why these bags are so essential. When you are living in a shelter day-to-day, you need to show up at a certain time with your things. You are allowed to stay the night, then in the morning, you must take everything you own with you for the day, until you’re able to check into the shelter again that evening. Last year’s bag drive had a direct impact on the youths ability to transport their items"
Please consider supporting this worthy cause!
Thrive Talk: Communication & Dealing with Family Conflict
Upcoming Thrive Talk that will be taking place on March 26th from 6:30-8:00pm at the CRC. The topic of this Talk is "Communication and Dealing with Family Conflict." This Thrive Talk will provide information and steps to create a deeper understanding of the concept of conflict, why it is inevitable, and ways to address it through open communication. This is a FREE community event with the opportunity to purchase a CEU credit for social workers and counselors.

Bus running late, what steps can you take?
Lakeview does their best to communicate with the schools in advance and then the school sends an email communication regarding the effected bus route. However, there may be times where the timing of the communication doesn't allow for this step. In this case, please call Lakeview directly to learn about the tardiness of the bus: 708.234.5555
In the future, the number for Lakeview can be found on our Bus Transportation webpage.
Cold Weather Reminders
District 97 believes it is important for students to have opportunities for physical activity and play time during the day—even during the cold winter months. This winter, students will be permitted to go outside for recess when the temperature, with wind chill, is 15 degrees or higher. The district utilizes the Wind Chill Chart developed by the National Weather Service.
- It is important that students dress in warm layers when cold temperatures are expected. Students should remember to bring hats, gloves/mittens, scarves, coats, snow pants and boots. It is recommended that families label these items with their children’s names.
- Our staff will carefully monitor students while outside and take the necessary steps to ensure students are appropriately clothed/prepared for the cold weather, watching out for signs of frostbite and other cold-related issues.
Emergency Closings and E-Learning Days
District 97 always strives to have schools open. However, if heavy snow or extreme cold make it dangerous to travel, we may need to close schools. The district’s emergency closing procedures are outlined in this brief deck; full details are posted at https://www.op97.org/communications/emergency-closings.
In July 2021, the District 97 Board of Education approved an E-Learning Plan for students to receive instruction electronically in lieu of traditional emergency days (or inclement weather days). This means that instead of canceling school, the superintendent now has the option of calling an “E-Learning Day” where students and staff learn and work virtually at home. This provides a continuation of learning and prevents the loss of critical instructional days, particularly in our first and second trimesters.
If the superintendent decides to close buildings and hold an E-Learning Day, the information is shared through multiple channels, including email, the district website, our Facebook and X (Twitter) social media pages, and the Emergency Closings website. Staff and families are also encouraged to OPT IN to text messages from the district by texting YES to 79041 or 87569.
