Euharlee Elementary Newsletter
March 2024

Dear Euharlee Parents,
As we move into the month of March, I am excited to announce the beginning of our schoolwide reading event from the One School, One Book program. All Euharlee students will receive a copy of the novel, Hoot by Carl Hiaasen. Hoot is an adventure novel about a group of children who attempt to save the habitat of a colony of owls. Please follow the reading schedule linked here as you read the novel with your child so that he or she can contribute to class discussions and answer the daily trivia questions. We hope that reading this book will be a fun experience for you and your child!
Please read the March Events section below for other events taking place this month. The next newsletter will include information for April and May so that you can plan ahead for end of year events, such as field day and awards ceremonies. Until then, do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you,
Jim Bishop
Principal
Math Fact Fluency
While we hope that every parent ensures that their child is reading every night, another important way to provide support is to work on math fact fluency. Studies over the last 30 years have shown that students who have mastered their math facts perform better on more advanced problem solving because they do not have to interrupt their thinking to struggle with a basic fact, such as 6 x 8. Since elementary students cannot use calculators on their tests, memorizing facts or having quick strategies to answer a basic math fact problem is their best option. Listed below are the required fluencies for each grade level and how many facts answers they should be able to write in a minute.
1st grade- add and subtract within 10- write 10 facts answers in a minute
2nd grade- Single-digit sums/ differences (sums from memory by end of year)- 20 facts in a minute
3rd grade- Multiplication products memory by end of year- 30 facts in a minute
4th grade- Multiplication & division (products & quotients memorized)- 40 facts in a minute
5th grade- Multiplication & division (products & quotients memorized)- 50 facts in a minute
Flashcard drills can be a fun way to practice math facts. The Parent Resource Room has flashcards available for check out or you can purchase your own set on Amazon for less the $5. Thank you for investing time to help your child master their math facts by the end of the school year!
