Leading with Literacy!
Third Quarter Wrap-Up
During quarter three, Kirk students enjoyed our most recent literacy unit on space by reading the Readtopia books: Diana Trujillo: A Space Scientist and Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Stargazer. We held an end-of-unit celebration at the Kirk cafe to wrap up the units, where students engaged in space-themed learning stations!
Fast Forward to Quarter 4
Our fourth quarter unit is called Social Justice: All Means All anchored by the story Rolling Warrior. The Rolling Warrior is based on Judith E. Heumann. Judy fought throughout her life for equal rights, especially for the rights of people with disablities.
You can read this book with your son or daughter, just ask your child’s teacher for a copy of this book to read at home.
In addition, to learn more about Judy Heumann or her award winning, Oscar-nominated documentary film, check out her website.
Math Matters!
School, home, & community connections
Math vocabulary is powerful and can be incorporated in many different settings including school, home, and the community. Basic math concepts that you can reinforce with AAC devices include same/different or more/less.
At School
Here is one classroom learning about the word, ‘Same’.
To teach and support visual needs, Ms. McGuiness uses high contrast pictures and a black foam board, a single voice output device with a recording of the word,, and uses concrete objects to illustrate the meaning of the word.
At Home
Same and Different (Tips)
Activities to practice this at home:
Folding socks: hold up one sock to show your child what you are looking for, then show them the matching sock and one additional sock that does not match and ask them to “find the same.” If they choose the sock that does not match, that’s okay, you can model “different” on their communication device.
Sorting silverware or setting the table: when putting silverware away, ask your child to “find the same” to place the silverware in the correct place or have them set the table to look the “same” way as you did.
In the Community
Activities to practice this in the community:
When going to the store, print a few pictures of items or pull a picture up of the item you’re shopping for on your phone. When you get to the aisle, hold up the item you’re shopping for and another item and ask your child to “find the same.” If they choose the item that does not match, that’s okay, you can model “different” on their communication device.
When at the store or at the library, point out how groups of objects or books are lined up and grouped together. Label them as the “same.” If there are any objects out of place, label them as different. See if your child can reorganize the items to make them match again! **A challenging way to practice this would be with the gift cards section**

Student Spotlight
Aarush M.
Aarush is enjoying his literacy time by learning letters. He focused on the letter S by identifying capital S, lower case s, saying the sound, finding it in text and exploring objects that start with the letter “s.” He couldn’t hide his excitement over the saxophone. He had a hard time trying to decide if he wanted to read or play this fancy instrument, so he did both!
Sporting News
Amy Rudolph Basketball Game
On Friday, February 23rd, Kirk School played in the 42nd annual Amy Rudolph basketball tournament hosted by Hoffman Estates High School. Kirk played an intense back and forth game, but lost to a very tough Hoffman High School team, 28-25. Kirk had 14 basketball players play in the game and Kirk’s cheerleaders stole the show with their amazing performance before Kirk’s game. This was the first year that there was a 3 point contest in-between games. Each school had one athlete perform in the contest and Kirk Campus got 2nd place! Overall, it was a great night, and all the athletes left with their heads held high.
