We hope you had a great mid-winter recess in February, and we look forward to the upcoming spring breaks. Take some time to reconnect with your loved ones and spend some quality time doing things you enjoy.
π Caught Being Kind! π
Congratulations to the students who were CAUGHT BEING KIND for the month of February! These students were recognized for their random acts of kindness towards their peers and teachers! Keep up the great work, and help us to spread the kindness all around!
π Library News π
Students enjoyed the spring Scholastic Book Fair, held in the library, in March. Thank you to everyone who supported the school library! Look for our next book fair in November 2024!
Students have been enjoying many varied makerspace activities during their lunch times, such as Lego Challenges, Origami, and virtual field trips!
Long Island Coalition Against Bullying
On Tuesday, March 12, our 6th, 7th and 8th grade students received a special presentation from the Long Island Coalition Against Bullying (LICAB.) Thank you to Joseph Salamone, Executive Director of LICAB, for sharing his personal story about being bullied and how this negative experience helped him create LICAB. πΊ SCMEA All County Festival π»
The SCMEA All County Festival was held the weekend of March 9 & 10. Great Hollow was proudly represented by many talented students who rehearsed and performed with students from all over Suffolk County! Bravo!
π College Day π
Great Hollow celebrated College Day on March 19th! Staff and students were encouraged to wear college shirts/sweatshirts to school. Teachers spoke about their college experiences and how college has positively impacted their lives. On college day, we had representatives from Adelphi, Hofstra and LIU, come in to speak to our 8th grade students about the importance of higher education.
Students had an opportunity to ask questions pertaining to careers of interest, being an athlete in college, and what it was like living on campus.
π« Parent University π«
Parent University 2024 will be held on Thursday, April 4, 2024 from 7:00-9:00 pm, at Smithtown High School East. Please see the flyer for additional information. Workshops will include topics such as Internet Safety/Cyberbullying, Mental Health and Wellness, Vaping and ADHD. Please log onto the Parent Portal to register for this important event.
π§ͺ Science Olympiad π§ͺ
Congratulations to our Science Olympiad winners! The GHMS Science Olympiad Team competed in the competition, earning several medals and ranking 8th out of 20 of the schools represented. Great job, Great Hollow students, and thank you to our advisors, Mrs. Skandalakis and Mrs. Delaney.
Salvatore Reyes and Shaheer Hussny placed 6th in Air trajectory- they built a machine to launch a ball a certain distance.
Khush Mehta and Sreeyanth Guduru placed 7th in Anatomy.
Sreeyanth Guduru and Vanya Sharma placed 4th in Crime Busters.
Neha Golia and Chaithra Nunna placed 9th in Disease Detectives.
Neha Golia and Hailey Blumberg placed 8th in Microbe Mission.
Hailey Blumberg and Kiera Flynn placed 10th in Roller Coaster where they designed and built their own coaster.
Sreeyanth Guduru and Khush Metha placed 2nd in Tower where they built several towers and tested how much weight it could withstand before breaking.
Charlotte Brophy and Abigail Nelson placed 2nd in Write it Do it, where Abby had to write instructions to Charlotte on how to build something Charlotte hasn't seen before, then Charlotte uses those instructions from Abby to construct it in another room.
French Night!
French Night was a huge success! Thank you to all of our Great hollow students who performed and helped to run the activities. Thank you to Mrs. O'Malley for organizing a wonderful event.
Beauty and the Beast Musical
For the past few months, the cast of our school's musical theatre club, have been hard at work putting together their production of Beauty and the Beast Jr.! Performances are scheduled for Thursday, March 21st at 7PM; Friday, March 22nd at 7PM and Saturday, March 23rd at 1PM. Great job to all of the cast and crew! Special thanks to Mr. McCarthy for all of his hard work! Break a leg!
