Staff and Student Recognition
Superintendent's Honor Roll
Gunter ISD is pleased to announce the recipients of the Spring Superintendent’s Honor Roll. Students are selected by teachers and campus leaders on the basis of merit and hard work. These students exemplify what it means to be a Gunter, Tiger. They not only work hard maintaining a good academic standing in their course work, they show concern for other people. You can see the compassion they have by the way they interact with their peers, teachers, and leaders. They lift others up if needed, they offer assistance in many circumstances, and they represent their school with pride. These students were honored at the school board meeting on March 21st.
Congratulations to the following students:
GES - Kennedy George & Truett Franklin
GMS - Caleb Bowen & Daniel Avendano
GHS - Makena Fady & Gavin Dupler
Students selected to the Superintendent’s Honor Roll are invited to attend a special field trip at the end of the year with Mr. Martindale and his administrative team.
Make a Difference Staff Awards
Gunter ISD recognized three of our top educators at the March school board meeting. Campus administrators selected these teachers for going above and beyond to keep our students interested in learning. These individuals definitely make a difference in the lives of so many students each and every day.
Congratulations to the following teachers for being selected as the Spring "Make a Difference" award!
GES - Julie Dorcey
GMS - Justin McDaniel
GHS - Jeff Egger
Strike the Mac Pose
Recognition day is fun for so many different reasons.
- We love to see the surprise on the recipients faces when they learn that they have been chosen.
- We love sharing all the good comments written by others.
- We love learning new things about them ... for example... we learned the correct way to pose for pictures from Coach McDaniel. Jut the chin out, bow the neck, and get the arms in just the right position!
Great job on the poses!
Solar Eclipse at GISD - Important Information
2024 Total Solar Eclipse Opt-Out Form
On April 8, 2024 a solar eclipse will be visible on a path across the United States. Our District will be in the path of totality for the solar eclipse. The Gunter School District has been busy planning to make this once in a lifetime event a unique learning experience for our students. On April 8, 2024, all Gunter students will be allowed to go outside and participate in activities and view the period of totality (“Solar Eclipse Viewing”). Classroom teachers will be providing additional details regarding viewing location for their particular class as the event approaches.
As always, student safety is our top concern. Looking directly at the sun is unsafe. The only safe way to look at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses''. Each school has acquired viewing glasses for all students. Although there is no way to fully guarantee student safety during such a rare event, we will take precautionary measures including pre-education to make students aware of the risks involved in directly looking at the sun. *At no time should students or participants remove their eclipse glasses and look directly at the sun as it could cause permanent eye damage or other unknown effects. There is no way for the school to guarantee that your child will not remove their eclipse glasses, so please speak with your child about the importance of keeping their eclipse glasses on at all times during this event. *
If you do not wish for your child to participate in the viewing of the eclipse outside, complete the Opt Out form that corresponds to the campus your child attends.
- Elementary Campus: https://forms.gle/MUVoHpEBPVgce5pn8
- Middle School Campus: https://forms.gle/aQHYkCsfzEWY2J7E6
- High School Campus: https://forms.gle/ifKpERsUGwtJmJCu7
** Not submitting an opt-out form will result in your child participating in the viewing outside.
** Any questions should be directed to the campus office.
On a fun note, check out how the cafeterias at all campuses will be celebrating the eclipse day :)
New to the District
Gunter ISD is excited to welcome Kari Wells to the Gunter, Tiger family to teach Agriculture!
She received her B.S. degree in Agriculture Science and Technology from Texas A&M - Commerce in 2016 and has been teaching Ag ever since. She began her career in Allen ISD, where she taught for 7 years before moving to Prosper ISD. In Prosper, Ms. Wells had the opportunity to open the newest high school and chartered their FFA chapter. When asked about her reasons for going into education, she said, "I have a passion for Agriculture and I enjoy helping students find their passion in Agriculture as well. I am so excited to be joining Gunter ISD as the new Agriculture Teacher!"
We are positive that Ms. Wells will help the Gunter Ag/FFA students find their passion and challenge them to learn new things and utilize what they are learning in their future.
Gunter ISD is excited to announce Jeff Guice as the Head Girls Basketball Coach for the 2024-25 season. https://5il.co/2h2bj

- Baird High School - Coached the Lady Bears to the basketball Regional Semi-Finals in 2001, and Regional Finals in 2002 & 2003.
- Mason ISD (14 Years) - Led the Cowgirls to the playoffs each season. The Cowgirls reached the State Basketball Tournament for the first time in school history in 2018 and returned to the State Basketball Tournament in 2019 & 2020. The Cowgirls made 3 additional trips to the Regional Basketball Tournament, reaching the finals in 2012. The Cowgirls went to the State Cross Country Meet eight seasons during his tenure.
Jeff's career basketball win/loss record stands at an impressive 681-289. With a record like that, comes many accolades, including:
- Being selected to coach the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All-Star Game & the Big Country FCA All-Star Game.
- Abilene Reporter News Big Country Coach of the Year
- 2-time San Angelo Standard All West Texas Super Team Coach of the Year

Boosterthon fun and success!
The GES PTO sponsored the annual "Boosterthon" during the month of March. The goal was to raise $25,000 for the school, and YOU helped us get there.
One incentive for students to participate in the fundraising efforts was "Churro the cow". Although he was a little nervous about his first visit to school, he warmed up quickly when our principals provided him animal cracker treats and sweet kisses. Mrs. Keller and Mrs. Brackeen agreed to kiss a cow if students reached their goal, and they did as promised, both principals donned their red lipstick and gave Churro a big smooch at a morning assembly! What a "moo"velous idea to inspire kids to work hard on achieving the goal.
Congratulations to the Top 3 Boosterthon earners at GES!
- Gold - Tinsley Bailey
- Silver - Logan Omohundro
- Bronze - MK Bowen
These students had a sweet time “Pie-ing” Mrs. Brackeen & Mrs. Gann! They were the top Boosterthon earners for their grade level one evening.
Top grade level earners for the Boosterthon were treated to a pizza lunch with the Principals!
Boosterthon Fun Run
Our GES Boosterthon Fun Run was a huge success! Thank you to all who volunteered, donated and supported our students to make our Fun Run so successful!

What are the Chances?
Mrs. Hulsey's 7th grade honors students created carnival games and determined the probabilities to winning their games through at least 3 levels. The games were set up as a carnival in the library, and while their peers played the games, the game creators measured their outcomes based on their predictions. They did a good job and had some really creative games!
