An Easter Message
I recall advice from my mother, “Don’t talk about politics or religion at dinner parties.” With Good Friday looming, I will deviate from the norm this time. One of my goals in my first year as Head is to reinforce who we are and what we believe at GWA.
These are two principles listed right under our mission statement:
· We believe in Judeo-Christian values, while respecting the heritage and beliefs of others.
· We foster a welcoming, inclusive community where our students feel safe.
Our goal at GWA is to know and love every single student. To quote one of my favorite pastors, Andy Stanley, we believe in drawing circles, not lines, where people feel included. We don’t want to divide or exclude. We seek to draw a very BIG circle, big enough to include everyone.
As we move through this joyous Easter Week, let’s keep the big circle firmly in mind. Whether your family recognizes Jesus Christ as the most influential figure in human history, or embraces Him as a personal Lord and Savior, or is somewhere in between, please have faith that, at George Walton Academy, we accept you, love and affirm your children, and are thankful and blessed that you are a special part of our extended family.
When I asked for advice on my Easter message this morning, a longstanding 10th grade mom shared this, “Come as you are; everyone is welcome at George Walton. Let’s walk the walk more than talk the talk.” Her comment reminds me of the advice from a mentor, former Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School President Pastor Dr. Karl Anderson. “People would rather see a sermon than hear one.”
My prayer for the GWA Family this Easter is straightforward: To model the values reflected in the life of Christ: unconditional love and acceptance of others, regardless of station in life; humility of spirit; and a genuine forgiveness of those who may have trespassed against us. Let’s strive always to let things roll off our back.
Godspeed this Easter and best wishes for a restful and rejuvenating Spring Break!
John
Congratulations, Emerson!
Congratulations to GWA junior Emerson Sheldon, who has been chosen as a finalist for the Governor's Honors Program, which will be held this summer at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro. Emerson will join other students, also chosen for this honor, in June for a four-week study program. Her area of concentration will be Biology and Environmental Science. Way to go, Emerson!
Ashley Martin is Student of the Month
Ashley Martin has been chosen as Rotary Student of the Month for February. She has selected Cécile Gervais as Teacher of the Month. Ashley has earned the Head of School list throughout high school and received an award for outstanding academic achievement from the National African American Recognition Program through the College Board. Ashley participated in the Michigan Math and Science Scholars summer college program held at the University of Michigan in 2022. This program is for students who have a love for math and science and the focus was organic chemistry. Last summer she attended the Multicultural Student Leadership Conference at Georgia College and State University. Ashley is a member of National Honor Society, Beta Club, and Recycling Club (group leader), as well as the varsity swim team and varsity track and field.
Congratulations to Ashley and Mrs. Gervais!
Chloe Walker is Student of the Month
Chloe Walker has been chosen as Rotary Student of the Month for March. She has selected Collin Dibble as Teacher of the Month. Chloe has earned the Head of School list and GWA Best of the Best Award throughout high school and served as a Junior Marshal. She is a member of National Honor Society, Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Interact Club, Recycling Club, and Book Club (president), and she serves as managing editor for the yearbook. Chloe is actively involved in her community. She has volunteered with Faith in Serving Humanity, Monroe Walton Center for the Arts, and the University of Georgia (Young African Leadership Initiative’s Mandela Washington Fellowship program and the Office of Global Engagement). Chloe will attend the University of Georgia.
Congratulations to Chloe and Dr. Dibble!
Built to Move
Middle school Robotics students are learning to write code for their robots. They are using skills they learned while programming and are now automating their robots. The first goal is to get the robot to move in a straight line. This requires not only programming skills, but also mechanical engineering. Students are learning to control the speed of the servos and the direction of spin. They have to compensate for any irregularities in the position of the components they are using. Students are also learning about matching the output of the servos to control the direction the robot travels. They will continue to hone their programming skills and robotic construction. The class will culminate with the building of an autonomous robot that can defeat other robots in a competition!
Cooking Up Southern Classics
During the eighth-grade cross-curricular unit, students engaged in a variety of enriching activities, including expository writing, exploring connections to Georgia, practicing measurement conversions, and analyzing heat transfer. Essentially, they crafted recipes!
Students were tasked with researching recipes that held significance to Georgia and their own family traditions. The culmination of their efforts is presented in this inaugural edition cookbook. Within its pages, you'll discover a delightful array of Southern classics such as peach ice cream and fried chicken, alongside international culinary delights like fajitas and cevapi.
The eighth-grade team is thrilled to share this collection with you and hopes that you savor the recipes as much as we did during our tasting! Click HERE to view/download.
Learning is Sweet!
Peeps Day was a huge hit in K-5 this week. The students started with a Peeps tasting by sampling three different flavors and describing them. Next, they explored their five senses using Peeps. Students were challenged to make a home for their Peeps out of toothpicks and marshmallows. They had so much fun drawing and designing their own Peeps flavor. Lastly, they became scientists and tested to see if a Peeps candy would sink or float and they observed how fast the candy would dissolve in four different liquids. What a great way to take a favorite Easter candy and turn it into a fun learning experience!
Special Delivery
GWA fifth graders visited the Walton County Senior Center today to make a special delivery to some very special people in our community. Donations were sent by generous parents to be used for game prizes and other necessities for the center. Some of our students played piano, and the girls' chorus sang for the seniors before their group workout began. After exercising with the seniors, they even danced the electric slide with everyone! The visit wrapped up with a meet and greet session where they learned more about each other. This annual field trip continues to be a heartwarming experience for all.
Sharing Traditions
Ms. Shupe strives to make her classroom inclusive and to make all of her students feel appreciated and celebrated. GWA parent Fatima McDevitt was kind enough to come share about Islam and Ramadan with her class to help them get a better understanding of their friend Sabriya's family traditions. She prepared a Powerpoint, handed out coloring sheets, and read a book to our students. The students also had the opportunity to get a temporary henna tattoo. Thank you, Mrs. McDevitt, for coming to share with the class.
Stellar Season
The varsity girls' tennis team defeated BCA 5-0 on Monday and earned the Region Championship title. They followed up with a 4-1 win over Grayson on Wednesday and stand at 12-1 on the season. The team will recognize their senior players , Emma Dopp and Riley Root, before today's match against Lakeview Academy.
Hitting the Links
Our varsity golf teams played their home course (Monroe Golf and Country Club) against BCA on Monday. The low scorers for the boys were Cade Williams – 36 and Henry Bailey – 39. The boys’ team will play in the Region match at MGCC on April 9. On the girls’ team, junior Sydney Colson has qualified for State on April 8 at Southern Hills Country Club in Hawkinsville. Good luck, golfers!
GWA’s 3rd and 4th tackle football teams will be joining the NGYFA in the Fall of 2024. Teams will be based on age groups (available to 8-10 year olds).
