Born in Kansas City, Missouri, and raised in San Pedro, California, Misty Copeland began her ballet studies at the late age of thirteen. She currently dances with the American Ballet Theatre (ABT), one of the three leading ballet companies in the country. In 2015, Copeland became the first African American woman to be promoted to principal dancer in the ABT’s 75-year history. She joined ABT’s Studio Company in September 2000, joined American Ballet Theatre as a member of the corps de ballet in April 2001, and in August 2007 became the company’s second African American female soloist and the first in two decades.
Since then Misty has served in several leading roles, including Clara in The Nutcracker and Odette/Odile in Swan Lake. She made history as the first black woman to perform the role of “Odette/Odile” in American Ballet Theatre’s production during the company’s inaugural tour to Australia.
She has worked with many charitable organizations and is dedicated to giving of her time to work with and mentor young girls and boys. In 2014, President Obama appointed Misty to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition.

Staffing Report revised to ensure protection of personnel information
The public facing Board of Education staffing report has recently been revised to ensure the protection of personnel information. The Board of Education receives a full listing of employment actions by employee name including new hires, resignations, retirements, long term leaves, violations, suspensions and terminations.
Providing a detailed accounting of these actions by employee name is a violation of protected personnel information that should not be shared publicly. To ensure integrity of this work, we have revised the public facing record of employment actions to align with the approach taken in other school systems.
While it has been a long standing practice to provide detailed information about employee actions, these public facing reports will now be provided with aggregate numbers, with the exception of new hires, where a first initial and last name will be provided. Protecting the privacy of employee personnel information while providing clear and transparent communication continues to be a Board of Education and school system priority.
We look forward to continuing the sharing of information, with employees and our community members, that ensure privacy and confidentiality.
