Family Participation In Special Education and Your Records
Dear Special Education Families,
As parents and those in parenting roles, you are a major part of your child’s special education team. IDEA, the federal law on special education, mentions the word “parent” over 450 times. It is clear parents are meant to meaningfully participate in the special education process as an equal team member.
In my first months as PCSD parent mentor, I have seen that our district values parents and families in decisions about each child. Our professionals are reflective and inclusive, and looking to do what is best for each child’s education. Looking at collected data is a big part of each decision and your parent information is very helpful to have!
Sometimes, when a child shows up differently at home and school, there can be confusion or disagreement on how a disability affects access to education. One tool that can help bring forth the parent perspective is your collection of information over time.
Much like the Pre-IEP Worksheet shared last month, this organization of information will help you prepare for your team meetings and look for patterns in your child’s education. You can make changes to this structure so that it works for you, and see if it helps you at your child’s next meeting:
