News & Updates K - 12 | Term 1 Week 7 | 11/3/2024
Principal's Welcome
DEAR PARENTS, GUARDIANS, STUDENTS & STAFF
There is no life without community. An old African proverb states that it takes a village to raise a child. In my short time at the College the sense of community connection has been a highlight to experience. The willingness of our parents to be generous in time to support our students and staff is indeed a special part of the College.
Last week concluded with a wonderful Friends of Frayne movie night. An energetic group of volunteer parents were led by Mrs Nikki Middleton and Mrs Aimee Hamer. The College gym was transformed into a movie theatre including fresh popcorn, lollies and sausage in a bun. The students and parents there certainly shared a nice evening together. Thank you to Friends of Frayne for making our community a happy community.
NURSE
I am pleased to announce that Mrs Leisa Munro has been appointed as the College Nurse. Leisa will commence at the College on Tuesday and will initially start as part time across both campuses. Leisa is an experienced registered Nurse who has worked in hospital and school settings. Her skillset and knowledge will help increase the level of support and care we provide our students. Our aim is to increase the role over time as well as create a designated pastoral care team to provide wrap around care support.
ENGLISH TEACHER
Mrs Jonelle Irving has been appointed to the position of English Teacher on the Duncan Campus. Jonelle is an experienced English Teacher having worked in multiple school systems. She also has leadership experience in both the pastoral and academic settings of schools.
LEARNING SUPPORT
Mrs Sonja Goss has been appointed to the position of Learning Support teacher. Sonja is an experienced teacher in the specialised area of Learning Enhancement. Sonja will start once she is released from her current school which will likely be for the start of Term 2.
SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT FOCUS AREAS
There are a number of areas of school improvement I highlighted in the start of year community letter that we are now progressing this term. These include:
- A review of the College timetable to ensure we have a timetable that suits the needs of our students as well as being cost efficient
- Appointment of a College Nurse
- A review of Organisational and Pastoral structures
- A review of our response and resourcing for students requiring extra support
- A review of the House system K - 12
- Replacement of our College Bus fleet
- Research of the possibility of after school care provision at the Balmoral Campus.
Parents will be kept up to date on these important projects through Frayne Today.
I wish everyone a great week as we get closer to that special time of Easter.

YEAR 5 BIG DAY OUT
On Tuesday, 5 March, the Year 5s embarked on their first 'Big Day Out' at Bickley Outdoor Recreational Camp. Once there, they had to step out of their comfort zones and tackle some truly challenging tasks, such as the Vertical Challenge, a climb up a 9m ladder and a zip line across the dam! Their teamwork skills were also put to the test as they had to build a raft that would float on the dam. Overall, it was a fantastic day, and it was wonderful to see all the Year 5s enthusiastically participating in the challenges. They're already eagerly anticipating their next adventure later in the year.

YEAR 10 RETREAT
On Monday 19 February and Tuesday 20 February, the Year 10s attended a retreat, led by the Youth Mission Team focusing on the theme of social justice. Through many fun activities and shared experiences we have learnt how to respect the differences of others and be our true selves. The retreat began with fun activities, progressed to testimonies from some of the members of the Youth Mission Team and finished with a prayerful time of reflection. It gave the Year 10s an opportunity to connect with their peers alongside, a time of reflection to strive to become a more genuine version of themselves by helping others grow. Thanks to the Youth Mission Team, the Year 10 students enjoyed a spiritually enriching retreat.

News & Updates
STUDENT SCHOOL INSURANCE UPDATE
You may be aware that Catholic Church Insurance (CCI) ceased operating on 31 December 2023. During the course of last year CEWA finalised the appointment of a new Insurance Broker to take CCI’s place from the start of this year, Aon was the successful broker.
As a result of a number of natural disasters and the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, 2023 saw a sharp tightening of the insurance market.
This has seen all insurers increase their premiums and reduce the extent of their cover and/or increase the amount of the deductible. One such change that directly affects students, parents and caregivers is the Student Accident Policy.
The previous policy provided insurance protection for students worldwide, 24/7 and did not require the injury to be as a result of a school activity. The new policy requires the following in order for a claim to be lodged:
· The event that triggered the injury must be school related.
· The student will only be covered outside of Australia if it is a school endorsed activity (for example, an overseas school tour).
As this is a significant change in coverage we felt it important to inform families in case they wanted to investigate providing their own insurance coverage.
Please click HERE to access Aon Parent Fact Sheet for your information. In the unfortunate event that you need to make a claim on behalf of your child, please contact the College and we can provide you with a Student Accident Claim Form to complete. Once this form is complete with supporting documentation, please email Joanne.Ellison@cewa.edu.au
HOUSE SHIRTS
Duncan Street Campus
All students on the Duncan Campus are asked to wear their House shirts on Monday 18 March and Friday 22 March. This is to allow them to participate in Neurodiversity Celebration Week and Ride2School Day activities.
RIDE2SCHOOL DAY
Friday 22 March
Students are encouraged to ride or walk to school on Friday 22 March.
Active transport is a great way to stay fit, reduces congestion on our road, not to mention being beneficial for the environment.
Don’t have a bike? Too far to walk? Consider jumping on a bus or train!
Alternatively, you may choose to drop students a little bit further from school to give them the opportunity to walk or ride.
Students who ride will be in the running for prizes as well as free snacks courtesy of Friends of Frayne!

Cert II Creative Industries
On 6 March, all of the Year 11 and 12 Certificate II Creative Industries students gathered at the Telethon Community Cinemas after school for the Media Perspectives event. It was an insightful event where we were given the opportunity to watch the short films of aspiring media students our age. It was a great chance to gain inspiration for our own projects and become motivated witnessing the amazing works shown on the night.

WA SCHOOLS' HONOUR BAND
WA Schools' Honour Band is a woodwind, brass, and percussion program that hosts experienced student musicians from across WA in a weekend of concert band rehearsals and workshops.
The sectionals, or individual workshops, were used to work on each piece with the other instruments that have your part or something similar. These groups were made up of high woodwinds, high brass, bass end instruments, and percussion. In these groups, we were able to hear each other’s parts individually, and be able to understand where our own parts fit in with the rest.
The group rehearsals were amazing. Everyone was working together well and worked hard to pick up the six pieces quickly. It was amazing to be surrounded by other people who had the same interests and passions as us, and we all played our best for each other.
At the end of the second day we were prepared and excited for the first concert and presentation of the WA Schools' Honour Band. Our wonderful band directors introduced our songs to our parents and friends sitting in the audience, who were eager to witness what we had been working on all weekend. It was amazing to feel the nerves and anticipation with the whole band. The concert was a huge success and the feedback we received was very positive.
We are honoured to have been part of this amazing opportunity. It brought our skills to new levels, allowed us to meet with like-minded musicians, and most of all have an abundance of fun. Needless to say, this is an opportunity we will definitely take up once more and highly encourage others to strive towards those levels or, if already there, to take up this opportunity themselves.

HOLY WEEK
Our Lenten journey is arriving at its destination: the death and resurrection of Jesus. During Holy Week, we celebrate the final days in the life of Jesus: the last supper, the arrest, the unjust condemnation, the betrayal of Judas with a kiss, the denials of Peter, the crown of thorns, the suffering and pain, and His death on the cross. The Passion of Christ can appear as a huge defeat, but it is in fact, a great triumph, the victory of love.
It is not the pain and suffering of Christ that we celebrate rather his love for us that save us. This love gives meaning to the sufferings, endures all the pain, and conquers even death for us. However, the Resurrection of Christ puts everything into perspective. Christ is alive and comes to help us to pass from death to life; from sadness to happiness. The love of Christ is stronger and most powerful than anything that may be against us and can make us completely happy.
Blessings | Fr Bello
