The Riverwalk Roar

The Riverwalk Roar: April 7, 2024
Happy Sunday, Pride!
We hope you and your loved ones enjoyed a delightful and rejuvenating Spring Break. As classes resume this Monday, a gentle reminder that our upperclassmen are only four and a half weeks away from completing the academic year, while our underclassmen have eight more weeks to go. Regardless of the grade, the conclusion of the 2023/2024 academic year is fast approaching. Although the promise of summer is on the horizon, there remains a considerable amount of work to be done before we transition into the well-deserved break. Let's continue to support and motivate each other through this final stretch!
I do have two quick favors to ask.
PBL at Riverwalk Academy - simple survey
At Riverwalk Academy, Project-Based Learning (PBL) is not just a method; it's the essence of our charter. We are immensely proud of the strides we have made in enhancing our PBL practices over recent years. However, we recognize that our journey towards perfection is ongoing.
This week marks an exciting opportunity for growth as several of us will engage with outstanding educational coaches and consultants for a few hours. These sessions aim to elevate our proficiency in PBL from good to exemplary. The guidance and support from these coaches, coupled with our dedication to refining our educational approach, have significantly contributed to our current standing, a milestone that fills me with immense pride.
In our previous encounters with these experts, we identified the need to precisely define PBL within the context of Riverwalk Academy. While we understand the essence of PBL and are familiar with various models, such as PBL Works, articulating what PBL means specifically for our academy has been a challenge. Moreover, it has become apparent that we must also clearly define the identity of Riverwalk Academy beyond the PBL framework.
Consider this: How would you describe Riverwalk Academy to a friend without mentioning PBL? The task may seem daunting, but we are on the cusp of formulating a clear and compelling answer.
To further this endeavor, we kindly ask for your participation in a brief survey consisting of a few simple questions. Your insights will be invaluable as we continue to define and refine our identity and approach.
School Climate Survey
The window closes on Friday to complete the State required school climate survey (open to all families). If you haven't done so, please take a few minutes to complete this survey. To do so, log into your parent portal (linked here) and navigate to the forms tab. It is brief and your responses are confidential. Additional instructions can be found here. If you have issues accessing your parent portal account, please contact Ms. Mabey.
Sea Lions, I mean Lions, let's have a great week back and a strong finish to the school year (if this sentence confuses you, check our our post from April 1st).
In strength and blessings,
~Dr. Compton
The Photo of the Week
Cooper Coggins (10th) band Jackson Herring (11th) gained some hands-on experience in York Tech’s lab facilities exploring the Welding VR machines and programming a machine to engrave their names on keychains. Riverwalk is excited to share we will have our first group of Welding/CNC Machinist Certificate candidates in the 2024-2025 school year. These rising juniors and seniors will work through a dual enrollment program next year and have the opportunity to earn certificates in both fields. Upon high school graduation, these students will be qualified for entry-level careers.
