Jordan Smothers Honored in Washington D.C.
GWA senior Jordan Smothers (pictured third from the right) was among the ten 2023 Samsung American Legion scholars who were recently honored for their achievement in Washington, D.C. During their stay in the nation’s capital from Feb. 24-27, the scholars toured the National Mall and Arlington National Cemetery and were recognized at The American Legion’s annual Washington Conference.
National Samsung American Legion scholars receive $10,000 for higher learning. Eligible applicants for this scholarship participated in either American Legion Boys State or Auxiliary Girls State in 2023, are the direct descendant (or legally adopted child) of a U.S. military veteran and demonstrated academic achievement and community service.
Jordan didn’t know his grandfather, an Air Force veteran of the Korean War, but he reflected on his service when he visited the Korean War Memorial. “I took the time to think about my grandfather” and all service members. “I feel a lot of times today that veterans are not given the honor and recognition that they deserve. They were willing to fight for us, fight for our freedom. Not everyone can say they would do that, but they did. That’s something special. It’s something we should truly recognize and be grateful for.”
Congratulations to Jordan on his outstanding achievements and his scholarship award from The American Legion!
How the Cookie Crumbles
In Mrs. Callaway's AP Statistics class, students dissected two different brands of chocolate chip cookies and found how many chocolate chips were in each cookie. This data allowed students to construct a confidence interval for the difference in the number of chocolate chips in each brand. This confidence interval allowed the class to have convincing evidence that Chips Ahoy cookies have more chocolate chips per cookie than Publix brand chocolate chip cookies. So, if you are looking for cookies with more chocolate chips, Chips Ahoy is where it's at!
Challenge Met!
Dallin Peck has already met and surpassed the Fifth-Grade Annual 40 Book Reading Challenge! Fifth grade students were challenged in August to read 40 books before the last day of school. They are required to read across several genres and write a summary after reading each book. An impressive wall display containing book strips of all books read by fifth graders so far shows the determined drive of our students! Way to go, Dallin and fifth grade!

Meet Britton Ryan
Hello GWA community! I'm Britton Ryan, the new Director of Development at George Walton Academy. I'm a proud graduate of Georgia Southern University and have recently put down roots in our wonderful community with my fiancé, Blake, and our two pups, Belle and Benelli. My passion for fundraising started early, at 16, when I volunteered with my church at Lighthouse Family Retreat, a nonprofit supporting families affected by childhood cancer. I've also worked with multiple nonprofits dedicated to serving those impacted by cancer. Most recently, I had the privilege of working with high school students in metro Atlanta, helping them raise over two million dollars in just seven weeks for the last few years. I'm thrilled to be part of the GWA family and can't wait to meet everyone. Go Bulldogs!
Service Opportunity
Our upper school students are encouraged to take advantage of an opportunity to get out in the community and serve on Friday, March 15. This is a great way to gain hours for Beta and NHS! If you would like to sign up, please fill out the form below so we can plan accordingly. Please sign up by March 12 so we can plan for transportation to the sites. You may reach out to athomason@gwa.com with any further questions or concerns.
